• FBI can secretly turn on laptop cameras without the indicator light
Scary. Insane. Ridiculous. Invasive. Wrong. The Washington Post reports that the FBI has had the ability to secretly activate a computer's camera "without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording" for years now. What in the hell is going on? What kind of world do we live in? Marcus Thomas, the former assistant director of the FBI's Operational Technology Division, told the Post that that sort of creepy spy laptop recording is "mainly" used in terrorism cases or the "most serious" of criminal investigations. That doesn't really make it less crazy (or any better) since the very idea of the FBI being able to watch you through your computer is absolutely disturbing
http://gizmodo.com/fbi-can-secretly-activate-laptop-cameras-without-the-in-1478371370 Washington post:
The man who called himself “Mo” had dark hair, a foreign accent and — if the pictures he e-mailed to federal investigators could be believed — an Iranian military uniform. When he made a series of threats to detonate bombs at universities and airports across a wide swath of the United States last year, police had to scramble every time. Mo remained elusive for months, communicating via •e-mail, video chat and an •Internet-based phone service without revealing his true identity or location, court documents show. So with no house to search or telephone to tap, investigators turned to a new kind of surveillance tool delivered over the Internet. The FBI’s elite hacker team designed a piece of malicious software that was to be delivered secretly when Mo signed onto his Yahoo e-mail account, from any computer anywhere in the world, according to the documents. The goal of the software was to gather a range of information — Web sites he had visited and indicators of the location of the computer — that would allow investigators to find Mo and tie him to the bomb threats. Such high-tech search tools, which the FBI calls “network investigative techniques,” have been used when authorities struggle to track suspects who are adept at covering their tracks online. The most powerful FBI surveillance software can covertly download files, photographs and stored e-mails, or even gather real-time images by activating cameras connected to computers, say court documents and people familiar with this technology.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/2013/12/06/352ba174-5397-11e3-9e2c-e1d01116fd98_story.html
Jokes on you, I'm too poor to buy one
Sounds like everything is doing alright to me.
Mine has a little sliding cover.
That's fine because I'm sure I can set the input from the camera to always be me flipping off the camera
I just put tape over my webcam
jokes on you, my laptop's webcam randomly broke a a while back
yo if they wanna see my dick that badly sure
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Simply having this sort of program/virus is hardly a problem, and has plenty of totally legit applications. If it is abused, though, then we got a problem. At least that's the way I see it, I don't really have much of an understanding of why people are so against invasive procedures when they're clearly meant to only effect bad people
If they want to watch me fap so much they could just ask.
Just gonna add that this would depend on the actual webcam hardware Macbooks have the LED hardwired to camera power, so there's no way to turn the webcam on for any length of time without turning the light on
I am frozensoda and I am using my one alt and risk being permanantly banned to come here and tell a few people I FUCKING TOLD YOU SO. I FUCKING TOLD YOU THEY COULD AND WOULD DO THIS AND YOU CALLED ME PARANOID AND CRAZY. Now what? what do you have to say? Doesn't this give my debate a little more fucking credibility now? http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1328497 I said it. I called it. I am truly hoping i dont get permed for doing this but I had to. I had to redeem myself for all the people who said I was just paranoid. There is no limit to what they will do to gain information. What do you have to say woolio and cubeman? I said they would do this. this will be my only post and I am now logging out. Please do not perm my main account, do what you will with this one. I had to redeem myself for all the things they said. It's pretty much the government installing a RAT on a suspect's computer, massive breach of privacy and there's nothing to keep this in check.

Not the smartest idea.
and they said that I was paranoid for keeping tape over my webcam.
And he's still insane. Woo.
This sounds like pure conspiracy bullshit. Those indication LEDS are typically soldered on the same traces as the main power pin for the camera sensors/assembly. It's physically impossible for you to bypass it unless FBI comes to your house, rip your laptop apart, and tear out the LED by force.
and they said that I was paranoid for keeping tape over my webcam.
You are.

Some are firmware controlled, some are controlled by windows, some are hardware controlled

Just because people have a weird consensus that such an argument is bad doesn't mean it really is.

Sure they can try to fuck with my hardware, reminds me of what happened to the last guy that tried it.
I keep my laptop closed and plugged into my monitor since I don't have a desktop. This information bothers me less than it should.
Nice Try, FBI, but my webcam doesn't work on Vista!
Nice Try, FBI, but my webcam doesn't work on Vista!
but you have to first ask yourself does anything work on vista?
You know, I was going to post this:
Oh no, I left my laptop running in the secret room where I keep my IED's, blueprints of governmental buildings, Al-Qaeda bros, and my "I hate America" posters.
but the sad thing is that I was hesitant, even for a second, to post that knowing very well that some people that say things with clear sarcasm and harmlessness online have had to face some form of undeserved consequence. Our freedom of speech is slowly getting policed and that's a very scary thing.
