• Acting President of Nigeria Dissolves Entire Federal Cabinet For No Apparent Reason

[quote]Nigeria's Acting President Goodluck Jonathan has dissolved the federal cabinet, a little over a month after taking up the top job. 'Today, the acting president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, dissolved the Federal Executive Council (cabinet),' Information Minister Dora Akunyili told reporters after a cabinet meeting. 'He did not give us any reason, and so, I cannot give any reason,' she said in a terse statement. 'There is no vacuum as permanent secretaries (directors-general) will take charge. I will also hand over to my permanent secretary tomorrow,' she added. Jonathan last February 9 took office as acting head-of-state after parliament voted to force ailing President Umaru Yar'Adua to hand over until he is well enough to return to work. The following day, he effected a minor cabinet reshuffle, moving the outspoken but controversial Justice Minister Michael Aondoakaa to the obscure Special Duties portfolio. Yar'Adua returned to the country three weeks ago after spending 93 days in a Jeddah hospital receiving treatment for an acute heart ailment. Since then, he has not appeared in public and no official is known to have seen him. Yar'Adua's long absence had worried the United States and European Union. Third World politics. As the article mentions this guy was appointed to replace the ill president, and some segments of the government and the people feel this is a shameless power grab. So he's making sure he keeps it.
