And while it--like the rest of the game--looks very nice, you wouldn't expect anyone who looks at it for more than a moment to think it's an actual photograph. Yet that appears to be exactly what someone working for television network RT (formerly Russia Today) mistakenly thought. As part of a news report this week on child soldiers, RT show SophieCo spoke with Emmanuel Jal, a former child soldier who is now a hip-hop artist. At one point, the camera pans by a screen displaying the screenshot seen above--too quickly for most to realize what they were looking at wasn't a photograph, except for one Tumblr user who did notice (via Kotaku).
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/metal-gear-solid-5-screenshot-used-in-news-report-/1100-6421193/
Edit: I'm not sure if I should be surprised about this or not.
Well now we know for a fact that MGS V is gonna start shit when it releases.
To Konami and Kojima Productions' credit, this mistake just means that they make some REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI, so good that they got mistaken for real picture.
To Konami and Kojima Productions' credit, this mistake just means that they make some REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI, so good that they got mistaken for real picture.
I don't think you could really confuse it with a real picture unless you barely glanced over it
Well now we know for a fact that MGS V is gonna start shit when it releases.
Oh yeah especially since it goes into topics like rape, child soldiers, etc. It'll start a shit storm alright I'm hoping it won't though but I sincerely doubt it.
To Konami and Kojima Productions' credit, this mistake just means that they make some REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI, so good that they got mistaken for real picture.
I see you using the word CGI here and I feel like I should point out that this is in-game and not pre-rendered.
It's good enough for some guy to think "our dumb audience won't notice/care" It doesn't really matter in this case though, it's not like child soldiers don't actually exist.
They had SO MANY choices. Couldn't Kojima Productions technically sue their bollocks of for using their (copyrighted) imagery without authorization? Because I'm pretty much 100% they didn't clear the usage for that if they didn't even realize it was fake.

It's bringing it to attention, if anything. Not any different from movies that do the same. Well, except it's a video game I guess which means it's literally made by satan.
To Konami and Kojima Productions' credit, this mistake just means that they make some REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI, so good that they got mistaken for real picture.
Better news agencies (RT is cartoonishly terrible) have used far worse thinking it was legit- what springs to mind is ITV using ArmA 2 footage. Quality doesn't really matter when morons work for these companies. That or, you know, intern browsing through library thumbnails fucks up, editor is in the bathroom at the time. But it probably never "fooled" anyone.
Couldn't Kojima Productions technically sue their bollocks of for using their (copyrighted) imagery without authorization?
It's a state-owned media company. In Russia. A more productive use of time and resources would be lighting the attorney's fees on fire.

Man, if RT thinks Big Boss dealing with child soldiers is bad, they're gonna flip shit when they discover he had access to venomous hamsters.
Man, if RT thinks Big Boss dealing with child soldiers is bad, they're gonna flip shit when they discover he had access to venomous hamsters.
Big Boss 2014 [sp]Oh shit wait[/sp]
I see you using the word CGI here and I feel like I should point out that this is in-game and not pre-rendered.
It is still computer generated so whats the point
This is happening often enough, and I imagine it will only start happening more often too as graphics get better and better. Maybe it will stop again once they are better than real life.
Well now we know for a fact that MGS V is gonna start shit when it releases.
But child soldiers have been a recurring theme in Metal Gear? This isn't anything new. Hell, MGS5 doesn't even compare to MGR:R's [sp]kidnapping and harvesting poverty-stricken children's brains.[/sp]
But child soldiers have been a recurring theme in Metal Gear? This isn't anything new. Well, its a fairly good photo to use to illustrate their point. So long as they're not using it as actual evidence of child soldiers I don't see the problem. Really just goes to show how mainstream video games are becoming that we use them as representations of real problems.
Who said they thought it was a photo or were trying to pass it off as a photo to the audience?
It is still computer generated so whats the point
I know what the term means and that it definitely encompasses that, but you know as well as I do that when people say CGI, they almost 100% of the time refer to pre-rendered material. So, for that reason I just felt like I needed to clarify it in case people didn't know.
To Konami and Kojima Productions' credit, this mistake just means that they make some REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI, so good that they got mistaken for real picture.
WHile it's still a "REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good CGI", I can't imagine how can someone take this as a real photo. It looks so...cgi.
But child soldiers have been a recurring theme in Metal Gear? This isn't anything new. Hell, MGS5 doesn't even compare to MGR:R's [sp]kidnapping and harvesting poverty-stricken children's brains.[/sp]
I don't think the backstory (hell, just the story) matters to them. If they see a child soldier actually getting shot in game then I'd imagine the reaction would be quite more intense than the other ones.
I don't see anyone in the news report saying something along the lines of 'this photo of child soldiers in Africa recently surfaced' or anything that implies that it's real. How is it any different when a news station is talking about hurricanes and they have a CGI hurricane in the background? At most it's an interesting tidbit that a news source used CGI from a well-known game but where are you guys coming from with the 'it's because they're lazy/incompetent' remarks?
Well maybe they aren't lazy. They might have known it was a CGI and still thought it was the most effective image. But, if the picture was shown in a slideshow of real images, then they are definitively incompetent.
It's not like video games have been used as footage or pictures before. Anyone remember this? (Yes, it's Arma 2)
Oh yeah especially since it goes into topics like rape, child soldiers, etc. It'll start a shit storm alright I'm hoping it won't though but I sincerely doubt it.
Need we all be reminded that this game series has a boss that shoots bees.
Need we all be reminded that this game series has a boss that shoots bees.
Or a boss that's a fat mad bomber that rides on roller blades Or a bi sexual vampire Or a 100 + year old sniper that can use photosynthesis Point is MGS is weird as fuck but that's exactly what makes it enjoyable.
