• Acustic or Electric guitar first?

I want to learn to play the electric guitar, but I know pretty much nothing about reading the tabs and stuff. Should I learn how to play acoustic guitar first? Is it "easier", as I've heard people say?
Acoustic.
Awe, acoustic guitar is a lot harder than electric. Really, you should go for which one you want to learn more to keep yourself motivated.

It's way harder. [editline]04:40AM[/editline] Well, maybe I'm overstating it, it's certainly not impossible, it's just harder to adjust to. And, really, if you're interested in playing electric guitar, going with an acoustic guitar as a starter is probably not the way to go. [editline]04:41AM[/editline] And, seriously, tabs are simple to read, so don't worry about that. You'll pick it up in no time. It's harder if you plan on getting really good, but (at least at my highschool) acoustics were really popular with hipsters who just wanted to learn to play wonderwall. I guess it depends how invested you want to get. If you just want to dick around, get a lower end acoustic. if you are serious about it, start with an electric (decent guitar and a pretty good amp), and down the road pick up a midrange or high-end acoustic.

[editline]11:45PM[/editline] But apparently I "should" start with acoustic because it makes learning electric easier, apparently.
Acoustic guitars just take a fair bit more dexterity than electric guitars which can hinder you quite a bit in the start, but you will get used to it with practice. But, as I said, if you're more interested in electric guitar, you might not have the motivation to work past the early stages. [editline]04:45AM[/editline] [QUOTE=Hmn30;21871142]But apparently I "should" start with acoustic because it makes learning electric easier, apparently.[/QUOTE] Okay this makes more sense. It's still silly, though. [editline]04:47AM[/editline] Practicing on an electric guitar will make you better at electric guitar.
I guess so. I'm not really all that interested in guitar playing. I'm going at my own pace, but I own a lot of guitars. I played on some acoustic guitars before, and the necks on those things piss me off, too wide. It'd make learning an electric easier in the same way that smashing your face through your drywall would make everyday life a lot less painful. [editline]04:48AM[/editline] But you could just cut out the middleman and go straight to the electric because they are far more comfortable
^^ that is a good post :v:
Which motivates you more? If you have no interest to play acoustic don't get it. That's how I felt and I eventually got an acoustic.
[QUOTE=Reaver1991;21871186]^^ that is a good post :v:[/QUOTE] I am the master of analogies.
The reason people say acoustic is easier is because they have you learn chords first. You can play chords on an electric, but they sound richer and more melodious on acoustics, especially if the electric is low-end. That said, unless you wanna play shitty pop, chords is not all you'll be learning. It seem to me like electric is the right choice. Don't get me wrong, you still have to learn your chords, scales, etc... it's a lot of work. However it's not tougher or easier on an acoustic, chords just sound a little nicer. Plus it's cheaper (no amp, no cable).
I don't know, my chords sound better blaring out of my amp instead of an acoustic soundhole. I think the acoustic is just generally favored because it sounds lighter and sweeter, not so loud and cutting. It's sort of cliche like that.
With acustic you focus mre on style and technique rather than sound
[QUOTE=Monkeytracks;21871622]With acustic you focus mre on style and technique rather than sound[/QUOTE] What? No. [editline]10:41PM[/editline] You focus on whatever you want with either. There's such thing as playing clean. As in no distortion.

It's a possibility

It's a possibility[/QUOTE] This is just self-control and focus. That's like saying, don't put a computer in your room because you won't study. Wouldn't you rather have the computer and the will to study? Set time aside to practice guitar, but also fuck around with effect pedals and stuff for fun.
Playing acoustic gave me a few good habits. Notably barring my chords with the power of 8 rams.
No point in getting an acoustic if you want to play electric guitar.
Just get what you want to play. Electric is good for almost any style, and has a wider range of notes so buy an electric. That "Get acoustic to start playing because its easier" is bullshit.
[QUOTE=Reaver1991;21871062]It's way harder. [editline]04:40AM[/editline] Well, maybe I'm overstating it, it's certainly not impossible, it's just harder to adjust to. If you don't want to be all good with a guitar, the investment into a one would be useless then, and again, you should go for an acoustic one. So I suggest to start playing on an acoustic guitar. It's not easier to play an acoustic guitar, it is actually harder, which is why when you move to an electric one, it would be a very easy readjustment. [QUOTE=7DeadlySyns;21871202]Which motivates you more? If you have no interest to play acoustic don't get it. That's how I felt and I eventually got an acoustic.[/QUOTE] Regardless, this man is right.
[QUOTE=STeel;21875967]It's not easier to play an acoustic guitar, it is actually harder, which is why when you move to an electric one, it would be a very easy readjustment.[/quote] Refer to hypno-toad's analogy.
steel is dumb
If you want to play music that has distortion get an electric. You'll have a lot more fun playing stuff you want to play. [QUOTE=STeel;21875967]It's not easier to play an acoustic guitar, it is actually harder, which is why when you move to an electric one, it would be a very easy readjustment..[/QUOTE] There is no sense to playing an acoustic if you don't want to play an acoustic. I honestly don't see why people say acoustics are hard to play, I had been playing my electric only for a large number of months, finally decide to pick up an acoustic, and there wasn't any relearning needed to be done. Yes bar chords were harder to do because it took more force, but that issue was gone relatively quickly. It's not like learning another instrument.
What are you, a fag? Play electric guitar goddammit
Get an electric guitar anyways. I bought an electric guitar when I was 12 because blink-182 was my favorite band (and still kind of is, even though I rarely listen to them). But after a few years I actually got into started writing stuff and now I love playing guitar so much, got an acoustic maybe last year barely play it. tl;dr Acoustic will put you off.
I jumped straight to Electric, hadn't had any troubles.
I have no ambition to play acoustic, yet I do :v: My stepdad's been playing for about 30 years or so. got 4 or 5 guitars. Only one's electric though, and he doesn't like me using it much, it's very nice and very expensive :v: So I just play acoustic. Planning on getting myself an electric soon. I do find the electric easier to play, as well.
Just get an electric, if you have no interest in playing acoustic other than to find electric relatively easier.
