Eugh, brutal doom
Eugh, brutal doom
What about it?
Eugh, brutal doom
Brutal doom is fun
Eugh, brutal doom
He posted a vanilla run as well.
Eugh, brutal doom
Eugh, knee jerk reactions
Brutal doom is overrated, anyways. Bite me.
Is it cool to hate on Brutal Doom now? Did I miss anything...?
Facepunch isn't a hive mind. Some People hate it, some people like it
I love Brutal Doom personally, I actually just completed his custom 32-map campaign the other day. Tons of fun. Can't say I'm a fan of the UI or weapons Insanity's Brutality has though.
The doom thread in the general games section seems split on it
Is it cool to hate on Brutal Doom now? Did I miss anything...?
Brutal Doom became the second coming of Jesus to some people, so now people have a bad knee-jerk reaction to it. The mod itself is fine, it was just over-hyped.
i wouldn't call it knee jerk when people stroke themselves off to 'unggghh blood n guts rip n tearr ughh' perhaps some people just.... have different opinions?
At some point someone got the weird idea in their heads that the original doom was about more things than just rip and tear and it spread like a disease. It's not though, doom is and always has been shotgun blasts and "what the fuck were the devs even thinking by making this bit so dark".
Doom was the equivalent of mixing the mindsets of D&D in hellish design and monsters (and the cacodemon plagarism), heavy metal with some bits of spooky ambiance, and the album covers of said heavy metal by like twelve guys in a garage with computers making a game of passion. Brutal Doom was one guy with a fetish for gore looking at the Doom comics and stealing a bunch of stuff to make the game into RIP AND TEAR for the fuck of it, and newcomers or those oblivious to the rest of the community let their awe for the mod get out of control, even pestering and harrassing some mod/map authors over whether things were compatible with Brutal Doom. Combine that with Sgt. Mark's infamous reputation due to some of his more dickish actions and there's a large schism for an obvious reason.
Is it cool to hate on Brutal Doom now? Did I miss anything...?
It really all boils down to the attitude of its creator, how much media attention it was getting over other mods and how the mix of both attracted quite a few people with bad attitudes to the forums of Doom's multiple communities, who proceeded to pester content creators about adding Brutal Doom support to their mods. Few people cared enough to be vocal about the violence or gameplay changes until well after all of that happened. A lot of sprites were also taken from other mods, if I'm not mistaken, which doesn't really help. All of that is well over now and the people it brought into the community. at least for the most part, either stick with themselves in Brutal Doom servers or have branched out to other mods and vanilla.
