There's not a single movie about prison or court that I haven't been entirely gripped by. Shawshank I watched as a kid, mesmerised by it.. by the culture in prison that seemed like a whole new world to the outside. Even inside a court, it seems as though it's a different place entirely. A few months back, I saw 12 Angry Men, which will probably be the odd one out in this thread as it's a movie made entirely about occurrences in the jury discussion room. I have to say due to the intense delivery of personality and character within a short space of time, even letting each character breathe and give us an insight into their whole mindset. It's got to be one of my favourites. These days, I've been delving into various takes of prison and court life. I have to say it's been a pretty intense journey. With movies like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Verdict, Paths of Glory and even last year's "A Separation" give more of a cultural take on these things. So the focus isn't ALL that much on the legal aspect of it all, but rather the experiences of each character within the film. a more obscure flick: Hunger from 2008 with Michael Fassenshiefenwhatever Really enduring take on prison life, it feels so penetrative which is what it really must be like in a prison. Instead of "Rushing to the point" like most movies do, and what most people like to watch, you must take yourself away from that and just accept what's going on. These people are in prison and it isn't exciting. it is NOT exciting at ... ... I noticed you don't have Inherit the Wind on that list. If you like court movies, try that one.
Watched Judgment at Nuremberg. It's a bit different compared to the others, seeing as it mostly takes place in court manages to stretch to 3 hours evenly. Have to say, for hardcore court fans, that's the one to see.
The Devil's Advocate? Not sure that's what you're looking for but the main character is a lawyer. Not really a court film per se.
Nah, "crime" investigation things are in a whole new genre. They take place in the real world and aren't closed off from society so much as these things.
Breaker Morant 1980 In the Name of the Father 1993 Midnight Express 1978 The Onion Field 1979 King Rat 1965 Are five not already mentioned that I think are very interesting movies involving these themes.
Judgment at Nuremberg was superb. Will watch Vera Drake and Dead Man Walking.
maybe this should include "investigative" movies too because it is all relevant.
oh my god if you haven't seen A Prophet, do it! it's so good
There's a French movie called Maléfique that almost entirely happens in a single prison cell, shared by four inmates in which they find an evil book and start trying some of its spells. It's not all that good but it has some really fucked up moments and has an overall very creepy atmosphere. I don't know if there is an English dub or anything, if there is you should definitely watch it.
fuck you all
Witness for the Prosecution I saw it on pbs one day and it was a really fun movie even though I usually can't stand to watch films made before the 70's.
In the Name of the Father is a really good one.
Definitely bookmarking this thread, love these types of movies. You should add some shows to the list too. Damages and Boston Legal spring to mind.
This is my favourite scene from Bronson, always makes me laugh. NOT IN MY ARSE YOU FUCKING HOMO
Primal Fear
This ain't half bad. Very different since the prison seems more like a closed off "shithole" in the city than an actual prison.
12 Angry Men was one of the most interesting movies I've seen in a while.
This is a fun and engaging film about a court case. I bought it with a magazine and was pleasantly surprised. Not a masterpiece but definetly worth a watch.
this movie isn't bad at all, worth a watch.
Witness for the Prosecution I saw it on pbs one day and it was a really fun movie even though I usually can't stand to watch films made before the 70's.
I second this movie, it's truly awesome. Probably the most suspenseful court movie I've seen.
Last movie of this genre I saw was a A Time to Kill I think. Sam L Jackson plays the father of his raped daughter. He worries that the men who committed the crime might get off so he gunned them down. Matthew McConaughey defends him while Kevin Spacey seeks the death penalty on him
Vera Drake can't recommend this movie enough, it's just rich in English culture but gut-wrenching too. It does concern pretty disgusting crimes though, it plays with your head a little bit because you can't make a decision about whose innocent or guilty.
anyone?
short eyes
My Cousin Vinny.
Primal Fear
saw this last night Really well worth watching, Edward Norton is great. [editline]23rd July 2012[/editline] It tackles psychological issues, and seeing as Norton has various strengths in playing really psychologically affected characters, this is one to see.
A prison film that doesn't grip you? Challenge accepted.
Will watch Kramer vs. Kramer, looks similar in premise to A Separation, doubt it'll be as good.
