I do not know the first thing about these. All I know is that they are cheaper than the real thing and way more quiet. What do I need to know? What are the best brands out there? Is it just as good to buy a kit at a shop rather than online?
Big Room is quite good. Vengeance Essential Series are well-known too.
you're looking to buy an electrical drum kit? go with Roland or Yamaha, since they are the leading brands. I've had my roland for 'bout 4 years now. One of the best purchases I've ever done.
Well, how much are you planning on spending? That's the first thing you should think about, how much are you willing to spend on a piece of equipment? Tell us your budget and we'll be able to help you out better  How good are you at drums? What sort of music are you planning on playing? Different musical genres (and your own skill) has use for more or less pieces to the drumkit, which will make buying a kit easier/harder depending on what you're looking after drumwise.
Can't go wrong with Roland or Yamaha. I've used a Yamaha DTXplorer and a Roland TD9KX. Very good kits. Rolands are generally more pricey but are worth it.

If you hook it up to a computer via MIDI and use something like Addictive Drums they're great.
