The US ambassador in Kiev Geoffrey Pyatt has waded into the debate about Russia's intentions with Ukraine by tweeting a photo reportedly showing the build-up of Russian troops on the border of ex-Soviet Republic. The tweet, with the English words "proof of RU military buildup", shows three successive photos of a field in Rostov-on-Don, Russia taken in October last year, March and April. The first photo shows an empty field, while in the March photo there are arrays of armoured vehicles. In the final photo, dated April 2, the field is densely packed with what appear to be vehicles and tents. The images come as Russia and the West tussle over Moscow's intentions for the rest of Ukraine, following its annexation of the eastern region of Crimea in March. Russia claims the presence of its troops over the border are no reason to worry, even as US diplomats point to what they claim is Russian interference within eastern Ukraine. Western leaders say the Russian activity mimicks its actions before Russia annexed Crimea, triggering the worst East-West crisis since the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. As Kiev’s interim leaders pledge to clear the Russian protests occurring in the eastern part of Ukraine, Russia has warned against making irreversible mistakes. Russia, Ukraine, the EU and the US are due to begin negotiations on a diplomatic resolution in Vienna on April 17. Please do not step on the lead miniatures. They're fragile. That said, why are the Russians still bent on massing their military strength? surely Czar Putin still hasn't cooled off?
Russia, please no. Don't. Here's to hoping this is just fear-mongering and armored dick-waving on Russia's part.
This is no massing of force. We are merely urbanizing this wheatfield.
Check the dates of photos, check the news. Those "masses" already left the spot.
This is no massing of force. We are merely urbanizing this wheatfield.
Maybe it's just a gathering of old vets to form a new collective :v:
Check the dates of photos, check the news. Those "masses" already left the spot.
That's what you want us to think.
WHAT IS BX804718?
WHAT IS BX804718?
FBI Surveillance satellite #B
FBI Surveillance satellite #B
Of course what you mean to say is space gas and orbital balloons.
Wow I bet someone's gonna be pissed. Generally you don't want to tweet your country's satellite imaging capabilities.
Russia, please no. Don't
This has been said in what?, the 10 threads before about russia wanting a war? Because you know it's totally working, putin notices the posts, gets a tear in his eye, starts singing a Disney princess song, realizes he's wrong and stops invading and everyone is happy and forgives him

You can't explain that
Wow I bet someone's gonna be pissed. Generally you don't want to tweet your country's satellite imaging capabilities.
I think it's pretty well known that the US can take pictures of fields in any country.
Wow I bet someone's gonna be pissed. Generally you don't want to tweet your country's satellite imaging capabilities.
Google also works at times.
Russia hasn't invaded yet. You can't explain that
Snip
I think it's pretty well known that the US can take pictures of fields in any country.
If google can do it then one would hope the government of the most powerful country on earth can do so aswell. Otherwise you have a problem on your hands.
Even if we couldnt do it by sat. We could just fetch one of the surveillance aircrafts still in use or throw a drone up.

"Oh, that ol' battery of armour? It's just something we threw together, really - you should see Moscow, xexexe."
Wow I bet someone's gonna be pissed. Generally you don't want to tweet your country's satellite imaging capabilities.
It's a commercial satellite. Notice the copyright to Digital Globe at the bottom of each image.
It's a commercial satellite. The only way it's "better" is that these are recent photos, while Google's are a few years old and only update when they get much better images.
WHAT IS BX804718?
At a guess: Either a grid reference (looks like one) or a name or code of whatever took that photo. [editline]11th April 2014[/editline]
And it's not even in colour, Google earth had better resolution in some places and is all in colour. I assume its a lot quicker to download and analyse a low res black and white photo than it is to get a high res one from the satellite. If this is the case it would make sense that Google is in colour as they don't need the images urgently the download speed isn't an issue.
russia won't go to war, they're just doing cold war type shit only problem for russia is that they don't have the financial resources to keep up this shit they'll be bankrupted by the 2020s if they keep going like this
russia won't go to war, they're just doing cold war type shit only problem for russia is that they don't have the financial resources to keep up this shit they'll be bankrupted by the 2020s if they keep going like this
Not if they go back to communism But seriously, Russia's GDP has been going nowhere but up since our friend Putin took over, not to mention his approval rating. And a war would only improve Russia's economy, take WWII and America's economy for example.
Why anyone thinks that Russia is doing this for anything other than defense from any strike from the west boggles me
Right...obviously they're amassing their forces on Ukraine's borders to defend themselves...you know...on Ukraine's borders...from an American attack. It makes so much sense when you put it that way.

It makes so much sense when you put it that way.
Now hold on there, let's run with that, for argument sake, shall we? It kinda does make sense in sorta the same fashion that a psychological test would. You tell the subject to do one seemingly simple task, but the result wasn't on how you preformed, but rather some deep sub-conscious thing most people aren't even aware they're doing it unless it's pointed out to them. It would - in theory - allow Russia to continue building a military force without too much suspicion, because the majority would assume it's all to do with the Ukraine, and not some crazy "defend-the-motherland!" plan they might have going on.

If Russia goes to war, they can certainly expect to see a rise in production and commercial morale within the country. However all the other nations shaking their finger at Russia, wherever they step, will really do a lot of harm. International sanctions could really hurt the economy, especially in the trade department. With that on the table, I really doubt russia is looking to start a war. They want this Ukrainian business done as quiet as possible. Get the rousers out, assimilate it back into Russia, and hope the next big media fiasco helps everyone forget.

Supposedly this last photo was actually from August last year, when Russia was conducting a military exercise in that area.
Here is an article with a lot more pictures: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26968312
