It actually happened: Bill to overhaul VA passes in the House.
(CNN) -- The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a $16 billion bill to overhaul the Department of Veterans Affairs.
It is a bipartisan response to the scandal over delayed care at medical facilities and allegations of alarming management shortcomings at the sprawling federal agency that serves millions of veterans.
The Senate is expected to vote on the plan as early as Thursday.
It's nice and all but it just seems like they threw some money at the problem to say they fixed it before they go on vacation and campaign.

Lol what should they have done? You're just criticizing this for the sake of criticizing it.

Well first of all you should understand that this does not fix the problem immediately. In fact, it would take up to 6 months for this money to even be spent. They could have used some of that money now to reimburse the families if they choose to go to a private hospital.

That's not the problem they were trying to solve. They were trying to repair the department to help it function properly again.

Yes and it's function is to offer healthcare services to veterans. While they are in the process of restructuring they should not let the veterans suffer anymore.

Sooooo you want them to throw money at the problem and hope it goes away?

Epic zinger. No, giving veterans actual care would not be throwing money at the problem. There are some legal problems and the inevitable delay with only attempting to fix the bureaucracy. They attempted to just silence the problem long enough for the mid-term elections.

do you know how to read lmao
putting money into reconstruction is a long-term fix as opposed to literally throwing money at sick people(An incredibly short term decision)

Yes I know that. But we also have to treat the symptoms of the failing bureaucracy while it is fixed. I never said this wouldn't help. All I was saying was that the money could be used now to help families with important medical concerns rather than have them wait half a year for treatment. And like I said there are other issues with fixing the system so it could take longer depending on how fast the judicial system works.
Throwing money at a bureaucracy will not fix it, giving money to families who need it to pay for medical procedures will at least temporarily fix it. If you cannot see this then I don't know what to tell you.
Fucking finally. Maybe now they can shift this momentum towards giving the general populace proper national healthcare like the rest of the world has.
Yes I know that. So basically..hmm...lemme get this straight.
Congress, in some bizarre miracle, does a genuinely good thing. Bipartisan, too, and tackle an age-old problem they've needed to address since 'Nam. You come in here and start shouting at them as if they stomped on your nads because it isn't perfect.
No wonder they don't bother to do good things anymore. They get shouted at anyway, might as well just not do anything.
Thank christ.
I know first hand how shitty the VA healthcare system is.
I took my Father to a VA Hospital a few weeks ago to have a BB removed from his hand (Yes, a BB. 10 years ago he shot himself in the hand with a steel BB on accident and didn't realize it was still there until it worked its say down to the bone).
What should have been, at most, a 30 minute procedure (local anesthesia, 1/2" cut, pull it out, one or two stitches) took literally 4 fucking hours.
Somebody read it carefully and make sure they didn't slip in another ACA defunding or some bullshit.
