Tony Abbott says Australia was 'unsettled' before British arrived.
Australia was "unsettled" before the British arrived and owes its existence to Britain's "form of foreign investment" in the land, Tony Abbott has said.
The prime minister delivered the keynote address to the Australian-Melbourne Institute on Thursday evening and during a question and answer session he was asked about foreign investment in real estate.
He said the issue was contentious and emotional and likened it to perhaps wanting to be able to sell your own house to a foreign investor, "but if my neighbour wants to sell his place [then] foreign investment might be the last thing we want".
"Our country is unimaginable without foreign investment," Fairfax Media reported Abbott saying. "I guess our country owes its existence to a form of foreign investment by the British government in the then unsettled or, um, scarcely settled, Great South Land."

This dropkick manages to keep getting worse.
Tony nullius
In a way I agree with him in the same way New Zealand was scarecly settled by the main Maori Iwi before the British arrived, but to completely disregard the Aboriginal people is disgusting.
"settle" "foreign investnent"
you mean dumped all the criminals on a continent and it got settled?
We should thank the British for colonising us
BUT
We shouldn't thank the British at all for the mass genocide on our indigenous people
He's right but he expressed it in a disgusting offensive manner
And the big-eared twat strikes again. Its going to be a great day when he gets booted out of office.
He's not wrong. They left no historical records or evidence of civilization aside from cave markings; nothing to indicate 'settlement'.
Abbot is bad for mah centrelink monies

Civilizations elsewhere accomplished a lot more with a lot less and have something to show for it.

No, sometimes I'm actually tempted make a fake family tree because Aborigine people can get some pretty sweet bonuses. And that doesn't happen anymore, children of any race can be removed from a home if their parents are fucking evil. This isn't the 1900's.

I think they can get kudos for being a sustainable society. The whole focus of their spirituality was and is to take care of the land. It's not like they were technologically inept, they had an understanding of dam construction, the dangers of over-fishing, and motherfucking aerodynamics. They weren't fond of architecture because they understood seasonal cycles and the effects on the food chain, so they never settled down in one place. Just because they didn't construct temples reaching to the sky doesn't mean there's no record of them. Actually, it was basically their whole philosophy to leave no trace on their continent.

This was stopped, but the last school for institutionalizing stolen indigenious Australian children only closed in the 80s, and it was not apologized for until 2007 after going on for over 50 years.
They were called the Stolen Generation because they were taken away from their parents. Because they were thought to be unfit and not allowed to see or know about them again. They were put through schools where they were anglicized and given to white families so they would be looked after by 'proper people'. Ultimately the plan was to breed them with white people so that eventually the black gene would be removed completely. It worked too because there are now many white Australians from aboriginal descent. Andrew Bolt, a terrible conservative tabloid news columnist even accused these people of taking advantage of benefits because they were not really indigenous even though they are members of indigenous tribes and their parents and grandparents are black.

He got his shit kicked in for that article, but there's still loads of racism going against indigenous Australians. Even more recently, a 13 year old girl shouted at Adam Goodes, an indigenous footballer, calling him an 'ape' at the annual AFL indigenous round (which, kind of like black history month, is kind of unnecessary and stigmatizing as it is, why do we need to make the distinction and have a separate day only for certain groups of people? We already have 'Australia Day'). Goodes is doing TV ads now about stomping out racism, but it still exists today in shadowy corners and dark alleyways where people secretly vent hatred and bile towards other people based on petty characteristics in order to justify their own failings. Racism exists everywhere, it's just only in the Middle East and certain parts of America and Africa where people can talk openly about how they think certain types of people regardless of their kindness, their wisdom and their humanity should be shoveling in the dirt, working in fields or even dying to prevent their difference from becoming an overwhelming factor in our lives, from becoming normal.

It often gets called defacto child abductions, because it generally does impact aboriginals the most. But that's due to some evil plot, but due to aboriginal families just not meeting the minimum standard of care which are set down by the legal system.
Said standard of care probably will conflict with their given standard and lifestyle of life.

There are plenty of fun images to illustrate how dumb this was:

It's fun to make fun of him but he's the Prime Minister so that's scary?
