ok so this movie is beyond incredible. if you havent seen it you owe it to yourself, its one of the greatest animated movies ever. heres what it's about!
ok so it's 1957 in a town on the coast of maine and this giant alien robot lands on earth. some kid finds it in the woods and they become friends. but then the government comes to destroy the robot! and in the end [sp]the robot turns out to be an intergalactic death machine and they want to nuke it but then the robot sacrifices himself to blow up the nuke.[/sp]
yeah, thats an anemic summary, i know.
and if this doesnt make you cry, you are beyond hope (spoiler alert):

Awesome movie. Nostalgia'd!
Everything the OP said is true, except Hogarth's mother. She's quite plain looking.

This movie is the shit. I got it for a gift one year. It was the special edition VHS that even came with a little Iron Giant action figure. Shit was cash.

It's already a complete story, it doesn't need a squeal.
This movie used to scare me because it had a giant metal death machine. Then I got older and I liked it.
I remember going to the cinema when I was a kid and saw this movie's trailer before the actual film began.
I don't even remember what film it was, all my attention was centered on the Iron Giant, I was all like "woah, I gotta see that movie !".
Never thought about it since then. Two years later I saw the Iron Giant dvd on a shop, instantly bought it and watched it, shat my pants because of awesomeness.
And I just shed a little manly tear just to think about all this again.

Uh, isn't this an exact copy paste of the OP on the original thread we had of the Iron Giant?
