In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.
Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.
Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.
Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."
Didn't they already say that they're doing a Boba Fett movie first?
One of them better involve Kyle Katarn.
Fuck yes, Gareth Edwards is a good director. After Godzilla, he deserves another big directorial job
Hope they don't go overboard with them though; cutting at quality for quantity.
Specifically, Whitta was the lead writer of Episode 4 of Telltale's The Walking Dead. Dude is moving up.
Jar Jar Binks standalone film
Jar Jar Binks standalone film
Star Wars: The Gungan Menace
It has a plot twist where Jar Jar is actually revealed to be Darth Darth Binks
Am I the only one who actually liked Jar Jar and would totally fucking go see a movie about him?

yes
Am I the only one who actually liked Jar Jar and would totally fucking go see a movie about him?
Of course not. I'm sure there's like 2 or 3 other people that would see it too.

Monsters was pretty bad though and I've heard Godzilla is just okay.
Gareth is literally the luckiest director/geek in the world
"k I'm going to direct a really low budget movie and basically do everything. Oh good, everyone loved it. Sweet, now I get to direct a $160 million film for Godzilla who I've loved my whole life. Great, it's making hundreds of millions of dollars. What's that? Now I'm being called to direct a fucking Star Wars film? Awesome."
They're announcing all these movies way too fast and it's worrisome. They need to settle the fuck down and give the writing the love it needs and deserves.
You don't want another Jar Jar do you? I thought not.
Godzilla was directed pretty well in my opinion.

They might be revising it because he's more of a villain. Disney really only makes movies about heroes.
Well, I guess Edwards directing a Star Wars movie is good news, but I can't help but worry about how it'd affect the production for the next Godzilla movie. Hopefully he'll still be able to direct that, too.

Yes!

sigh.

I dunno, I've always figured him to be a chaotic neutral type of fellow.
I wonder if they're going to make an movie about a rogue sith who works as a merc, but landed in a Republic contract.

I don't like him but I'd love to see an film about him for only the sheer lunacy of the concept.
Can we get a Jar Jar trilogy?
Nice. Gareth Edwards did a great job with Godzilla.

He can be a neutral character and still be a villain.
The fact of the matter is that whenever he appears, he's on the side opposing the heroes. He helps the CIS in Episode 2, the Empire in Episode 5, and the Hutt Cartel in Episode 6.
I dont understand why people are panicking about the frequency of these films. Marvel release 3 a year and they are all awesome in a shared universe, and it works. Star wars has an entire universe to play with, and they are only doing one movie a year. It'll be fine (I hope oh dear god I hope).

He only helps them in those movies because of a previous encounter with Solo that gave him a massive grudge, later in the books he turns into mandalore and recreates the mandalorians (somewhat obviously since he is mandalore...) and basically helps the Republic. Until they basically get enslaved by the Vong and shit, but even then he did so unwillingly.
Yes!
sigh.
What does that mean?
Am I the only one who actually liked Jar Jar and would totally fucking go see a movie about him?
I want to see someone slice off Jar Jar Binks eye stalks with a lightsaber.

new star wars family comedy

He hasn't had that much luck in writing movies though. The 2 movies he wrote the screenplay for were Book of Eli and After Earth, neither of which were particularly great.
I hope these standalone movies will be of an epic scale. Not like those Star Trek movies with stories so bland it could have been just a 45min episode.
