Goodwill was brewing at a Starbucks in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Wednesday morning when a customer at the drive-through window decided to "pay it forward" and buy coffee for the next person in line.
Instead of just accepting the free drink and moving on, however, that customer returned the favor and bought a drink for the next person in line at the drive-through.
It happened again... and again... and again, until 378 customers had purchased drinks for the strangers in line behind them, a "pay it forward" chain that lasted nearly 11 hours.
"It makes your day better, I think," customer Lexie Kane told The Tampa Bay Times.
Generosity, no matter how much, always makes somebody's day better. Kudos to the people who kept this thing going.
I bet whoever's at the back feels like a dick
It's like GST meets STD..

Surely if she paid for one, and she was offered a free one, they still have another free one to pass on...?
There are legitimately good people around here.

only one person can effectively get a "free" coffee in this system and they did, the second to last.
I had someone buy me a coffee ahead of me in line at starbucks. It felt weird because they where still right in front of me in line.
I didn't pass it on

pay it forward
Or you could ya know take that free coffee and use the money you would've spent and donate it to a charity which would actually do some good in the world instead of making people "Feel good" about buying someone's $7 starbucks coffee.
Edit: Please give me dumbs yes
How's this work. What if the person behind you ordered $15 in coffee and you ordered a tall plain coffee? I don't buy this story to be honest. Was everyone buying someone a tall plain coffee or something? I don't go to starbucks for a coffee, I want my frozen caramel coffee flavored slushy.

why should it matter so much to you what other people do with their money?
why should it matter so much to you what other people do with their money?
All I'm saying is that anyone walking into a starbucks doesn't need their drink paid for...
So, they are guilt tripping the person behind them to continue, not convincing them to be generous. There's a big difference. Kind of sucks for the person who payed someone's large bill and only got a cheap coffee.
This is just marketing for starbucks.

And theres that too, if I bought a $3 coffee no I'm not paying for the person behind me's $7 caramel mocha frappuccino with a bunch of addons.
Wow, you spent 10 bucks on the guy next to you instead of yourself and the next guy spent 10 bucks on you. You certainly switched things around didn't you? You stupid, vain motherfuckers. If you want to go do something useful with your money go donate it to someone who needs it. This is just a circlejerk of rich people spending money for other rich people so they can go share it on facebook later claiming faux generosity.
It's the thought and the idea that matters, not whatever the fuck you do with your money. Holy shit ya'll acting like these guys are poor and $10 will put a dent in their wallet.

Always that one guy...
I refuse to have anything to do with 'pay it forward' things. It's from that stupid movie.
I do believe in what goes around comes around. But for that to work you have to do it of your own free will, and it has to be your idea to do it. If someone else asks you to take part then it no longer counts. If someone else mentions "Well, so far all these other people have done it" it really doesn't count.
It doesn't even make sense the way they do it at Starbucks. For instance, three people in line, I'm the second one. The first guy pays for my drink, but I already have the money to pay for my drink, that's why I'm in line. He's not helping me, I can afford it or I wouldn't be in line. Now if I pay for the person behind me, that person can also afford it so I'm not helping him or her either. All they are doing is shuffling the money around amongst people who already have the money.

yes, because everyone wanted to be useful with their money instead of deciding to be generous- no wait, they weren't trying to be useful with their money, they were just circlejerking cuz theyre rich. hold on. no, it was actually ploy to get people to like them on facebook all along!
vain motherfuckers! how dare they spend money on someone other than themselves!
I always thought Pay it forward was exclusive to people who couldn't afford the stuff, though
wait

yeah i'm sure you've donated a lot of money lately huh
try not to hurt yourselves with those edges guys
You don't have to donate it to charity. If you and me are walking down the street and we pass a Starbucks and I know you don't have any money to buy a drink, I can still buy you one. It's my treat.
Then later, when you are with someone else, or just when you hear someone needs help, you step in to help them. THAT'S the spirit of this kind of giving, because you are doing something you want to do and thought of doing. Me treating you to the drink has nothing to do with it.
If I treat you to a drink and tell you "Don't worry about paying me back, do something for someone else when you can", that's not in the spirit. Now my action paying for your drink is an exchange, a drink now for something you owe later.
That's what this pay it forward thing is, a pre-arranged exchange of Starbucks' drink costs.

Yep so much edge, do you not realize this is just circle jerk of people accomplishing nothing other than making it seem like hey did a good thing today.
The last person (Who should've been the only person to actually get their drink free) fucking paid for their drink, accomplishing nothing.

whats wrong about a drive through starbucks?
theres one in my town that does that
All I'm saying is that anyone walking into a starbucks doesn't need their drink paid for...
that doesn't mean it's not nice, does it?
only one person can effectively get a "free" coffee in this system and they did, the second to last.
So the lady who rejected the "free" drink and just bought her own, is lady X. The person in front of lady X complied with the chain and bought lady X (and themselves) a coffee but lady X rejected it and simply bought herself one, she didn't use up the "free" one she was offered. She just cut herself out of the chain. The person behind lady X therefore could have been offered the "free" coffee (or to continue the chain), no? The second to last person, the person in front of lady X, continued the chain and thus didn't use the "free" coffee.
Am I missing something here?

Oh in a "drive-thru" by the time you get to pay, the person behind you has ordered so you can pay theirs?
[editline]23rd August 2014[/editline]
I've never been to a drive-thru

except someone after the woman got theirs for free and didn't put any money down either
someone got a 100% free drink and didn't hand any cash over to the store.
i would just like to point out (as someone who has worked in a similar establishment where the same thing has happened) that 80% of these customers went through and their combined order was less than $10
so what probably happened for most was that someone paid a tenner for their cheap coffee (let's be real, starbucks ain't cheap but it's not liquid gold and they don't charge that much either) and that change covered the next, who put down a ten again, etc.
it's either that, or they asked to pay for the next order with a credit card and again it isn't that expensive
its not like the last person was like "nope i wanna pay" and then everyone else was all "oh shit son you paid guess this extra cash the person in front of you left is null and void *poof* it's gone guys it's unusable!"

drive thrus work as such
-you pull up to the order board and order via speaker to someone wearing a headset
-they put the order in and store it while someone else will make it
-you sit in line waiting for your turn to pull up to a window where you pay and get your things, or you pay, and then move up to the next window to get your things.
what happened here is that people would get their drink and pay for the next person, unless there's no line (which, can happen) and in that case the people happened to leave cash.

god forbid someone's nice to somebody else without it being a utilitarian contribution to society right???
man i sure do feel hip and cool with my cynicism

It's a nice thing to do, but it's really insignificant. You're just paying for someone's coffee.
It's an easy feelgood thing to do, as there's no risk. The 50 other people in front of you put down money.
My point is just that it's a bit overrated with people treating it like it was 378 people coming together to be generous to eachother.
