(AP/WCCO) — A waitress in Minnesota is suing after $12,000 was left at her restaurant table — she says it was a tip but police say, it’s drug money, according to The Forum. The lawsuit was filed in Clay County District Court and alleges that the waitress found a box, left at her table at the Fryn’ Pan restaurant in Moorhead. She said she followed the customer to her car to return the box but the woman told her to keep it. The waitress said she found bundled rolls of cash inside the box, totaling $12,000. She said even though she has five children and could use the money, she decided to call police, according to The Forum. Officers told the woman to wait 90 days in case someone claimed the money. The Forum reports that after three months, police told the woman the cash was being held as drug money. (TM and © Copyright 2012 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries. I would take legal action
How is that legal?
Chances of it actually being "drug money" are highly slim, and in most stories I have heard about people turning in money to the cops and waiting 90 days, they never get the money for one reason or another.
Why would call the cops?
This is why you don't talk to the police until you have to.
Why would call the cops?
because some people are considerate and empathetic and might actually be good people?
Why would call the cops?
A false sense of being a good Samaritan. She already tracked down the owner and she said 'keep it'.
Wow, the person who left that there is a real bro or sis in this case.
This is why you're supposed to be a greedy asshole and keep the money to yourself.
Of course it's drug money. How else would the would the sheriff pay for his Ritalin?
Why would call the cops?
If you lived a life of $5-$10 tips per day, then suddenly found a 12,000 dollar tip on your table, wouldn't you have called the cops?
This is why you're supposed to be a greedy asshole and keep the money to yourself.
as terrible as this sounds I have to agree
I heard a story about a farmer near here that found a duffle bag with $4 million in it, he turned it into the police, and they decided it was drug money and kept it.
If the lady told me to keep it, hell I'd keep it.
because some people are considerate and empathetic and might actually be good people?
that makes no sense she asked the woman who left the money to take it back, but she refused. how would calling the cops make her a ~good person~ in any way? It sounds like the possibility of it actually being drug money is there but there's hardly enough evidence to prove it. Regardless, it's ridiculous that they would wait that long to finally claim it as drug money. Suing sounds like a reasonable option (unless, perhaps, she demands much more...). Giving it to her would be a better cause. Who knows, maybe it was a very generous tip from a nice Minnesota woman. I hear they're quite nice people.
no
To be honest, and this is obviously a conflict of morals, calling the cops over that many wads of cash is a proper action. That's way too much money to be carried around in a small box. To me, that just spells: suspicious.
because some people are considerate and empathetic and might actually be good people?
And this is what they get for being in the society of today. The world is a shit place, surprise!
Well, thats what you get for involving the police.
By drug money, it's not made FROM drug money. It's FOR drug money. For the cops. The only explanation.
The source did not mention the fact that the money smelt like pot.

[editline]4th April 2012[/editline] no
Maybe the started thinking about why someone would be walking around with $12,000 in cash stuffed in a box, and was concerned that it could have been stolen in a robbery or something. Are there any other ways to explain why someone would by walking around with $12,000 stuffed in a box? It's probably something not-so-legal.

Fuck cops..real talk.
honesty doesnt get you anywhere these days like the dude who reported accidentally downloading cp and he gets in trouble for it fuck that
Why would call the cops?
Because someone could have reported it missing. It's the right thing to do.
Never talk to the police. Even a police officer tells you not to talk to the police.
I seriously don't understand why she called the police in the first place.
The cops should give her a $12,000 reward for turning in the money.
She should never have called. Come on, who the fuck would actually bring a box with $12k in it and then accidentally leave it? Just fucking keep it, it's obviously a huge tip from a wealthy person. Even if they did somehow actually leave that at the restaurant, you'd bet they would be back at the restaurant asking about the money as soon as they realized. It's then you give them some (or all) of their money. Until then just keep the fucking money.
