Drug addiction not a criminal issue, says chief medical officer

England's chief medical officer has said drug addiction should be seen as a medical problem, but that society chooses to treat it as a criminal justice issue.
Professor Dame Sally Davies's comments came as she told BBC Radio 3's Private Passions that she ate hash cookies at university.
Davies said of her university days in the 1970s: "I never smoked so I couldn't smoke joints but I did have some cookies, until on the third or fourth occasion I had hallucinations and I've never touched it since.
"And I think I understood through that what my father said to me when I told him I was going to try it. He said: 'Drugs decivilise you. You stop being a civilised person.'
"And I understood why so many people were against even the soft drugs. So, like the fact I do enjoy wine, I'm open about my past."
She added: "Of course it's a medical problem, I mean addiction is a medical problem, and it becomes a public health problem and then our society is choosing to treat that as a criminal justice issue."

She's 100% right.
Let's see how long it is until the Home Secretary pulls yet another retarded move and starts denouncing this as she did with Prof David Nutt and all the other reports by people who have done extensive research in various topics regarding various drugs. I'm not going to go into legalise / decriminalise / criminalise anytihng territory, as we all know how that ends, but policy makers should really listen to those who have expertise in the fields.
It directly isn't, the desperation that may come with is

I think that's a very narrow minded view, and definitely someone who has no experience or knowledge about drug use. Personally i think that drugs probably do the opposite, i feel like they open your mind for the recreational users.

I like how alcohol is referred to as a 'soft drug' when its actually the drug that kills the most people.

What the hell does this mean?

Indeed alcohol is most definitely a "hard" drug and should definitely be regulated a lot more than it is. I recall Prof. David Nutt said on the London Real podcast a while back that one of the things with alcohol is you don't feel it immediately so you can quite easily end up drinking far too much not realising how pissed you are till it hits and theres nothing you can do about it because it's already in your stomach and digestive system where with smoking various drugs you feel the effects near enough instantly and can adjust your intake accordingly.

It kills the most people because it's a common and legal drug. This has nothing to do with the "softness" of it.

That's the worst feeling in the world, the realisation of exactly how steaming you are, knowing you're going to be violently sick and being unable to do anything about it.
