Before nuclear talks commence with Iran, US sends the USS Enterprise to the Persian Gulf for intimid
Before talks over Iran's nuclear program get underway in Istanbul later this week, the U.S.S. Enterprise arrived in the Persian Gulf as part of a message to Iran that U.S. military resources are ready in the event President Obama orders military action against the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.
For now, tough economic sanctions directed at Iran and the threat of more are the stick the international community is using to bring greater transparency to Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Iran: Okay, okay, we'll talk now.
US: Yeah, well I'm gonna threaten you anyway!
The Enterprise is a ship of peace and exploration, they have nothing to fear
This will also be the last voyage of the Enterprise before it gets scrapped iirc.
The Enterprise is 55 years old and is the oldest active ship in the U.S. fleet, and it is still intimidating. That's impressive.
Can't be the only one who thought of Star Trek for at least a split second
dammit

At first I did, now I'm disappointed.
I hope they don't scrap it... It's the 1st nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the world. It deserves a nice port where it can become a museum.

They have to cut through the hull to remove the nuclear fuel for all 8 reactors, it's going to be like Swiss cheese afterwards.
That sucks... Would make such an awesome museum to visit. Hell even if they had a line of jets and stuff which were hosted aboard the ship it would just make it even better.

Let me guess, as soon as you realised we don't really have a significant presence in space, you got depressed?
Wouldn't be the only one

But then its former captain will steal it and flee to another planet to rescue his best friend.
No, wait...

They've got something like that for the USS Yorktown in Charleston. Don't know if they ever did it for any other ships.

There's the USS Midway in San Diego, pretty cool to walk around inside of it.
the Enterprise is the ship equivalent of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino
Gotta flex that muscle to remind Iran that the US means serious business regarding their program, I guess.
Is it really for Iran?
It is the Persian Gulf. Pretty much every military hotspot that the US is involved in is pretty close.

I'd have thought it would go into Mothball first before they actually scrap the thing.
Iran, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the USS Enterprise, it's 55 year mission, to explore strange new countries. To seek out new foreigners and new civilizations that we can force into democracies. To boldly go where no American has gone before.

What other nation in the gulf at the moment are we truly at odds with? We've already fucked Iraq over, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are friendly. The other countries are too small to be threatening. The only logical choice is for Iran.
Maybe we can shoot down another one of their commercial airliners, killing another 300 of their citizens, and try to say that we thought it was an f-14. Oh, and then we won't apologize or claim responsibility. And then we'll wonder why they hate us!

Well crazy idea, instead of scrapping those 8 reactors (Which if I remember right) will still be good for another 60 years. I say put in port and convert it to a power plant and free museum.

They had it coming

In August 1988 Newsweek quoted Vice President George H. W. Bush as saying "I'll never apologize for the United States of America. Ever. I don't care what the facts are."
:v:
According to the U.S. government, the Vincennes mistakenly identified the Iranian airliner as an attacking military fighter. The officers misidentified the flight profile being flown by the Airbus A300B2 as being similar to that of an F-14A Tomcat during an attack run
That sucks. The last Enterprise if any deserved to be a floating museum.
"Contrary to the memories of various USS Vincennes crewmembers, the Iranian airliner was ascending (not descending, as an attacking fighter aircraft might)"
It was just grossly negligent. And then we didnt even admit fault or apologize for killing 300 of their people.

omg the us shot down civilians (with people saying it was an accident) they are obviously lying and purposely did that yeah!
This obviously sparked Iranian aggression! Iran being mean was caused by US imperialism!
Haha, I love how stupid Iran apologist arguments are.

It costs tons of money just to keep ships like that floating, it's a constant battle against rust and corrosion
