Google is reportedly nearing a deal to sell Motorola's phone division to Lenovo, a move that would give the Chinese smartphone manufacturer a major presence in the US market. how much did they make from it while they owned it? I don't understand why they would take such a loss on it unless it's simply not worth what they paid, or they know something that I don't and there's a problem with the company

"a person briefed on the matter"
one of the big reasons to buy it was to secure a big patent portfolio to defend Android from patent infringement filings by Microsoft, Apple, Nokia etc...
Wasn't there some sort of conspiracy theory surrounding the reasoning of the acquisition?
It's official. wat. http://investor.google.com/releases/2014/0129.html
"a person briefed on the matter"
owned
Wasn't there some sort of conspiracy theory surrounding the reasoning of the acquisition?
They might be able to write off $9 billion now in "corporate losses" for taxes. I'm not entirely sure how all that works
Lenovo make milestone/droid again but not shit
Lenovo make milestone/droid again but not shit
I want my droid 5 :(
Patents were involved, I'd imagine.
In effect.
Google will maintain ownership of the vast majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosures. As part of its ongoing relationship with Google, Lenovo will receive a license to this rich portfolio of patents and other intellectual property. Additionally Lenovo will receive over 2,000 patent assets, as well as the Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio
They are google. I'm certain they did this for a reason (or they took a calculated risk)
So much for timely updates, I guess.
Wow, partnering with Samsung at the same time they ditch Motorola. Let's hope Android doesn't go to total shit
aw we never got to see that Moto Nexus..
Wow, partnering with Samsung at the same time they ditch Motorola. Let's hope Android doesn't go to total shit
Samsung is making some nice house appliances, the two tech combinations can lead to huge innovations in the phone/house equipment departments.
ok so basically here's my two cents on this this was always to acquire patents the moto x was a convenient bonus
Gibe decent International Android phone with physical qwerty keyboard plzz.
In effect. There was a lot of tax stuff as well, I think Google ended up making a good buck on this.

They've kept the patents, including that neat modular phone 'Ara' they showed before: http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/29/5359068/google-keeping-motorola-advanced-technology-group-project-ara-phone Now that they've sold Motorola, these guys are moving straight into Google's actual offices
Dang. Two years from now, when I'm back on the market for a new phone, I'm still hoping to get a good Motorola phone. Doesn't seem likely though. It's kind of weird, but I just like the Motorola brand, it's the only other phone company I've ever really liked besides Nokia (which went to shit as well) I don't know, maybe my HTC One is so nice because I don't give a shit about HTC? :v:
I was never as impressed with the Moto phones as everyone else seemed to be anyway. Lenovo didn't have a smartphone business and they would never be able to break into it on their own so this is a smart move.

Hence why the motorola brand might help them go further.
