·The measure will last for 40 days, "If God wills it" in the words of Venezuelan Electricity Minister, Luis Motta Dominguez
The reality is that Venezuela has dragged more than eight years a severe power crisis, resulting from the abandonment of the electrical system nationally during the government of Hugo Chavez and corruption that has devoured about 60,000 million dollars intended to alleviate it, according to calculations opponents.
The measure affects Caracas and the 10 of the most populated states and industrialized in the country.
But, at present, inside Venezuela occur blackouts up to eight hours.
Valencia, third largest city, has had to deal with four-hour-long power outages without notice, FOR WEEKS.
All of Maduro's desperate efforts to reduce electricity consumption have failed so far.
He has also ordered shopping malls and hotels to self-generate electricity for eight hours a day.

Tl;dr The blackouts will be 4-hour long and the regulation will last for 40 days aproximately; Shopping malls are fucked, too.

Wait, what?
How exactly are they going to do this? Just shutting off the grid for four hours nationwide seems unlikely to help, if they're actually over capacity. Will they be shutting off power to different regions in turn?
I hope they'll be keeping power going to hospitals etc.
But I guess we could be watching the imminent societal collapse of a country... electrical supply is so crucial to those who are used to having it.
Wait, what?
Translation fuckup I guess, think it means the electrical infrastructure of the country's all fucked up because the money that was supposed to fix and improve it got corrupted away instead.
with the hydro dams almost bone dry due to lack of water, the economy in shambles, and everything running out i'm surprised that the country hasn't completely dissolved into utter chaos
i guess this is the result of 17 years of hugo chavez and his even more inept successor
It's okay, they'll just blame it on America and absolve themselves of responsibility.
RIP freezer contents
Excuse me the blunt language but this is FUCKING BULLSHIT I work as a freelancer ( game programming ) and I can't do my fucking job because all of the Internet providers here have turned into shit so my internet collapses every 5 minutes . Now on top of that we have fucking 4 hour blackouts if it wasn't for the ups I ordered off amazon years ago most if not all of my equipment would had been fried by this time. I seriously hope this piece of shit that calls himself a president just stops it. There is no way he is going to do something positive for the country as you all can see
Also the measurement lasting only 40 days is completely bullshit too they are going to keep it beyond that and not notice anyone as they usually do

Most UPS' can be modified to work with larger deep-discharge batteries with adapter leads.
Though that means the larger battery will have to sit besides it instead of inside it.
Doesn't solve the internet connection problem tho, but gives you more time to work with.
Oh that does sound nice. At least I would be able to continue working and upload the changes when the connection is somewhat stable

Typically hospitals have generators (red outlets in the hospital = power-failure safe. Code carts, surgical equipment, respirators/heart monitors etc all get plugged into the red outlets) that keep the important stuff running during the event of a power-outage.
On this scale, though, I really don't know what will happen. I have no idea how long the generators are intended to keep power

Those diesel generators are only meant to be run in emergencies. It's definitely not gonna be cheap to run long-term.
How the fuck is this guy still in charge of the country?
Bloody hell, I know Venezuela is currently running pretty poorly, but cutting electricity now?
Wonder what the next goverment could do to improve the current situation of the country.

dissolve the government
socialism at work
Also, what about the people on life support in homes? Surely their UPS can't handle out the full duration for as frequent as they want
socialism at work
plz not again

Large portion of public hospitals here not have generators (at least in my city) Only private clinics have

Ouch. Like what Tobba said, they're really only designed to last a few hours anyway. Any longer than that and people will suffer

Well assuming it's an actual power grid (idk it could be different) they have to balance load with demand and so they probably are rolling the blackouts
socialism at work
Corruption and petroleum based economics at work, not building an adequate power grid has nothing to do with socialism or even communism for that matter
Those diesel generators are only meant to be run in emergencies. It's definitely not gonna be cheap to run long-term.
Last I heard, gasoline is still piss cheap there, even though there was a relatively massive price increase.
socialism at work
A completely shortsighted, mindless version of it, yes
Those diesel generators are only meant to be run in emergencies. It's definitely not gonna be cheap to run long-term.
This is not the problem though, remember, Venezuela still has ridiculously cheap gas and diesel. The main problem with relying in these generators is that many hospitals around the country (particularly public hospitals) have many of these generators damaged, and they can't find replacement parts or buy new ones outright due to underfunding and scarcity of parts. All in all, everything is fucked up.

no need for the addendum, this is pure-blooded socialism in action.

there is no such thing as people on "life support" in Venezuela. Most people can't afford it, and even if you could, you can't find the equipment, or anything.

Not the first time, in 2009 we faced a crisis as bad as this one due to El Niño. However, the government had 6 years to get ready for it again, and didn't do shit. Supposedly, they signed contracts for 13,000 megawatts of additional energy, yet to date, only 3,000 have been installed (while other energy sources have fully ceased to work, such as the case of the Raul Leoni dam in the Guri complex).
Hahahahahahaha I've been having this problem for at least a quarter of every year for the past four years over here
and it's 6 hours and above daily. every shopping mall/business establishment has invested in generators already
internet cafes are bankrupt
programming students are zombies
step it up casuals

I can guarantee you that there are priority buildings that won't have their power cut, Hospitals are very likely one of them.
