Canada - Shaw: We're going to go ahead with usage-based billing anyway

Yes, it seems the power of douche is greater than the power of the voice of 500,000 Canadians as the ISP Shaw has decided that charging people by the GB is something they'd like to do.
“We are of the mind that we still have a tremendous upside in terms of pricing power on our Internet services and through the course of our consultations with our customers, I think what we’ve seen from that is a recognition that the principle of ‘if you use more, you should pay more’ holds true,” Shaw chief executive Bradley Shaw is quoted as saying in a transcript of the call from April 13.
“But we believe as we work our way through some of the feedback we received from them that there really is a win-win for our shareholders [as all of] their customers in the way we offer our tiers of Internet services.”
Mr. Shaw said the company would have more to say about its new pricing and packaging plans in the “late spring, probably May, early June.”
And all the while, the Conservative Party of Canada is the only one refusing to take a stand on rising internet costs:
The Conservative Party is refusing to respond to questions about Internet governance that were put forward by non-partisan citizen engagement group OpenMedia.ca. While the other major parties have gone on record by answering the all-party Digital Future Survey, the CPC has repeatedly refused to respond.
“Canadians are paying some of the highest Internet fees and for some of the slowest service,” said OpenMedia.ca founder Steve Anderson. “This has to change.”
Anderson continued: “In refusing to answer the Digital Future Survey, the Conservatives risk losing the pro-Internet vote on May 2nd. In the 21st century citizens expect more from their representatives.”
With at least a conservative minority on the horizon (perhaps even a majority), Canada is on the fast track to having the most expensive and worse quality internet in the developed world.
Vote wisely on May 2 guys.
and yet people will probably vote for the harper government anyway
and yet people will probably vote for the harper government anyway
Old people don't care about internet and young people don't vote
It's not like we can do anything, we should have had this in our minds since 56K. If we use more, some fucker is going to charge us more even though it doesn't hurt anybody but their reputation.
Think of it this way, if ISP's start to do this, then more will follow (so nobody's reputation is hurt). Don't expect to have just monthly caps and warning letters anymore, it's going to get serious.

Unfortunately, all ISPs are cunts these days
So we need to elect someone who is willing to legislate on this, stamp their foot down and tell ISPs that enough is enough.
The really crap thing is, the only people that probably care are those that use a lot monthly. People that use their PC for Facebook and Google probably won't care, because they'll be paying the same or even less than before.
Still, it's terrible.
I just came here to say Bell sucks also. Customer support sucks, prices suck.
"thank you for calling Bell customer support, my name is Fred"..... Sorry, but your accent is a little too indian to have a name like Fred

TekSavvy is shit, I tried it and they would not respond my my support emails and phonecalls for a entire week because my internet was down. So I switched back to shaw. I also bet you that none of the candidates will take stand on this.
Fuck. Just fuck.
I'm voting NDP >:(
Aren't ISP's privately owned companies?
I mean, someone could make a new ISP, without this pay-per-gig deal, and get loadsa emone.

Liberal, NDP, and Green party leaders already have

An independent ISP would have to lease the lines from a larger one unless they had billions of dollars of capital set aside to run their own cables.
I think we need to vote for the Pirate Party...
I'm being serious, it does exist.

Be realistic here. No one's voting for Pirate or Green. It's going to be NDP vs Liberal. And odds are NDP will win. Liberals are about the business man. NDP is about the working man. Being the working man I know how shitty this country is. So NDP gets mine.
Canada's government sounds dumb.

I wouldn't go that far
it seems like they get most things right, the internet is something they don't

The Internet is the most important thing in the world.

My internet is just fine. This per GB usage thing won't fly. It's not like gas where everybody stands idly by as the prices sore up higher and higher for no other reason than the companies(business man) being greedy, taking advantage of the people.
FYI, we had the technology for electric cars in the early 1900's shortly after the first car was built. Oil companies saw a potential in lost sales and bought them out and destroyed everything leading to anything other than fossil fuel.

Much like how marijuana plants were illegal to use for clothes (hemp). The government wanted people to buy animal shit, instead of perfectly fine hemp clothes.
Looks like I'm never moving to Canada. I spend way too much time per day to pay for usage.
At the all-candidates meeting in my school's riding we had today, candidates from all 3 major parties adamantly opposed UBB, with the Liberals (specifically Gerard Kennedy, the most likely to replace Iggy when he loses the election) being the ones most adamant on eliminating it altogether.
Well fuck, I use Shaw. Looks like I have to convince my family to switch ISPs if they don't want my more or less constant internet use through web browsing and gaming to make their internet bill skyrocket.
This is ridiculous, both Shaw and Telus have now said they want usage-based billing and in my area those are the only two ISPs available. The internet in Canada is shitty enough as it is, this is the last thing we need
Fuuuuuuuuck.

Gaming and web browsing uses minimum internet.
It will skyrocket only if you plunder the seas.

No, not "only" if you're a pirate
What about Netflix subscribers? The whole reason ISPs are doing this is because so many of them sell cable TV as well, the internet is a competitor and they want to shut it out.
But good news guys, the latest EKOS poll seems to show that the conservatives only have a 6% lead in support over the NDP. (Read this in the Winnipeg Free Press, you'll have to hunt it down online) If NDP's growth in support continues throughout the week those unelectable socialists might just form a minority government. They're kind of coming out of nowhere and it's great.

People will cast ballots and then the ballots will be counted and the people with the most ballots get to do stuff
Harper will get to do so MUCH STUFF.
Well not so much, cause he will go in as a minority.

I saw another poll which gave NDP the majority.
