Haven't seen a thread on this, and I'm a big fan of Mr. Thompson as a writer, so I decided to take a shot.
[b]The Novel:[/b]
[img_thumb]http://howigit.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/the-rum-diary.jpg[/img_thumb]
Written by Hunter S. Thompson, the Rum Diary involves a journalist named Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to work for a major newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Set during the time of the Eisenhower administration, the novel encompasses a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the Americans who staff the newspaper.
Thompson himself traveled from New York to San Juan in 1960 to write for an ill-fated sports newspaper on the island.
He had unsuccessfully applied to work at the larger English-language daily called the San Juan Star while novelist William J. Kennedy was the editor.
While in Puerto Rico, Thompson befriended many of the writers at the Star, providing the context for The Rum Diary's fictional storyline.
Although Thompson was only 22 when he wrote the story, it deals extensively with a fear of “going over the hill” and growing old. The prominent characters are those often found in his works, violent, manic, and alcoholic.
It is written in a highly paced and rather exciting style, also typical of Hunter S. Thompson.
His works have rapidly rose to some of my favorite of all time, and Thompson's composition as a writer will always be one that stands out among the rest.
[b]The Film:[/b]

Starring Johnny Depp as Paul Kemp, who is a nomadic journalist who grows tired of New York and America under the Eisenhower administration and travels to Puerto Rico to write for The San Juan Star. Kemp begins the habit of drinking rum and becomes obsessed with a woman named Chenault, played by Amber Heard.
[b]Cast:[/b]
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f9/JohnnyDeppByArnoldWells2011.jpg[/img_thumb]
Johnny Depp as main protagonist Paul Kemp, journalist for the San Juan Star. Really the best choice in any Thompson based movie, if you have seen any interviews of Hunter himself, and watched Depp play in a movie about a book written by him, you would understand why. (Case and point: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.)
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/Aaron_Eckhart_by_Gage_Skidmore.jpg[/img_thumb]
Aaron Eckhart as Hal Sanderson, a land shark and Chenault's fiancee.

Michael Rispoli as Bob Sala, a jolly but disheveled sad sack of a photographer who's taken Kemp under his sweaty wing.
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b7/AmberHeardTIFFSept10.jpg[/img_thumb]
Amber Heard as Chenault, main love interest for Depp, leading him to a world of trouble.

Richard Jenkins as Edward J. Lotterman, editor of the San Juan Star.

Upon finishing the novel, I for one can't wait to go catch the movie which is in theaters now.
Discuss!
I was wondering why this movie reminded me so much of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", it's written by the same guy.
When i was in Puerto Rico I saw a few of their sets. A family friend even got a picture with Johnny Depp because they were filming in the harbor and he was head of a tug boat company.

I would have loved that. Johnny Depp's gotta be my favorite actor of all time
So anyone seen this yet? What's the consensus? It sort of looks like Fear and Loathing in a way, especially Depp's acting. Apparently it sucks, but I'd like to hear it first hand so to speak.
I want to see this so badly. Fear and Loathing is one of my favorite films, and <3 Hunter Thompson, the crazy motherfucker he was.
Apparently it didn't transition from book to movie very well.
I think this movie would've really benifitted from Terry Gilliams weird (in a good way) directing style. I've yet to see the movie though, so I'll give this Robinson chap a chance.
In all honesty I'm surprised there hasn't been a Jack Sparrow rum joke yet

They're all over YouTube
This looks fucking hilarious.
Aw shit this movie is out?
I need to see it.
