I've noticed recently that there are a lot of threads in General Discussion about travel, including Honduras, Colorado, Japan, and Germany. There's also interest in moving or staying at other places, like Wisconsin and Denmark.
In light of this, I think it might be a good idea to create a Travel and Culture forum to collect these threads into one forum under the Hobbies catergory. It could also produce a larger interest in these sort of topics. There might be a lot of Facepunchers that want to take a vacation to a particular place, but they don't know too much about the area or country. It's also possible that threads like 'Let's talk about England!' could be incorporated under the new forum as well, as it falls under culture in general.
So how about it, Facepunch? Does it seem like a good idea or no?
We actually once had this type of forum at one point. Then garry removed it for some reason.
Perhaps the chat threads in non-English languages can go there as well.

It's an English speaking forum and Gaz wants to keep it that way for simplicity.
(There's no agenda or anything)
Make it happen Garry.
I was just thinking about making a thread that would totally fit into that section, we should totally have it
Why not? It covers a pretty wide yet popular topic.
If we made a forum for every trend that pops up in GD we'd have a christarp forum by now
Proposal: bring back custom forums.
tired of having sections for everything, general discussion aint general anyore
If we made a forum for every trend that pops up in GD we'd have a christarp forum by now
but thats exactly why
there's way too much shit in GD

I don't like the new sorting rules but GD was basically dead before now
It was Chat Thread Central
well, the half-dead portuguese chat thread survived in the chat section for like 2 years, but when we made a new one not long ago in GD, it got sent into oblivion in a week and a half
This could be done with a megathread. I doubt the board would get much attention.
I wouldn't really want a megathread, it'd be a giant mess to be honest. I'd prefer a subforum.
To be really honest, we don't need a travel forum at all. All you can possibly know about a place for travel has been summed up by wikitravel already.

Except from personal opinions by other members of an online forum you may be visiting regularly.
FP couchsurfing thread would be pretty bawss

A lot of people seems to be opposed to this, but personally I think it sounds like a good idea.
I think we've had a language forum or some shit before and it didn't work out because it wasn't active enough, but if it was combined with general threads about traveling and culture I imagine it could be a pretty decently active subforum, but I'm not so sure that a "travel and culture" subforum just like a "countries subforum" would do well enough on their own.
I also think they'd be a good combination because it would mean that if there's a thread for the general discussion of people from one language (such as the "Svensk Allmän Diskussion"), people who want to go visit that country could then ask people from that country directly for advice.
Anyway, just my 2 cents on the matter.
Yeah, you can bunch in the language learning threads there too. The Japanese thread was active for a while, and I know a Chinese and French ones were up at some point as well. We can have culture learning, discussion, travelogues, all without being swept up in the shithead that is GD.
We used to have a cooking forum, if we make one for travel and culture it will probably die out.

except there's one cooking thread in GD right now and at least 5 which would fit in the travel and culture section
I made this thread for this purpose, but I got lazy of updating and it wasn't popular enough. Plus not so many people post in those country threads, so I'm not sure if a sub forum can survive long enough.

General discussion is filled with travel/culture threads. Perhaps it will even out the traffic if people are going to a completely different section for it? This seems like a rather reasonable idea. Weather the previous section (apparently there was one in the past) did well or not doesn't really matter-it's obvious that there's much interest in the subject now.
This needs to get done. Hopefully the mods will pick up on this thread soon. I haven't seen any of them posting on it yet, so I'm not sure if the proposal has met their eyes yet. Hopefully it will.
Maybe they took a look, did not care and went on with their day.

we used to have a 'chat threads' section with loads of different language threads, it then got merged into GD and many of the less active threads got sent back into no man's land
i dont think we ever had a culture section though
