MTV parent company Viacom plans to sell Rock Band and Dance Central developer Harmonix.
The announcement came during the company's third-quarter earnings call this morning. Viacom provided no reason for why the developer is up for sale.
A MTV Games spokesperson responded to requests for comment and provided IGN with the following statement:
As announced this morning, Viacom plans to sell Harmonix and have reclassified Harmonix to a discontinued operation.
However, this announcement does not affect the ongoing work at the studio as they continue to support Rock Band and Dance Central. Viacom's decision to exit this business reflects our strategy of focusing entirely on what they do best: make great branded entertainment content and deliver it through a variety of platforms.
Harmonix has and will continue to create terrific video games. But for us, it is about focus. Viacom is in discussions with several potential buyers and will continue to fully support the business until a sale is completed.
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter was puzzled by this move.
"They obviously had expectations that were way too high, and in retrospect, they appear to have paid too much for Harmonix," Pachter told IGN. "I am not sure why they're pulling the plug now, as Dance Central is positioned to be very successful.
"I think the buyer is either Activision or EA, with Activision having more to gain by absorbing a key competitor."
Electronic Arts has not responded to requests for comment.
Rock Band 3 is a good music game. And Harmonix was the studio what made the first two Guitar Hero games.
Anyways, I'm hoping Activision doesn't pick them up and run the RB series as far down into the ground like they did with the Guitar Hero franchise.

As far as I am concerned Rock band is currently the best music game out there. Guitar hero is undoubtedly a piece of shit.
Why sell Harmonix?
I was expecting Activision to sell Neversoft.
Oh wait they don't sell anything, they let them go bankrupt.

I'm praying that EA gets them and not Activision.
why the fuck do people buy these games
why the fuck do people buy these games
Because some people like rhythm games?

You mean Simon Says?
It's more like Simon Says EXTREME.
more like TOO LAZY TO LEARN AN Instrument EXTREME
rock band is far better than guitar hero. with rock band you can import all your songs and they always release new songs every week (i think) not like guitar hero. i hope EA picks it up, they have been doing good this year.

Stop playing modern war FPS games and enlist in the army then!
ITT: Guitar "elitists" who tell other people who play Rock Band to "pway a weal instrument"
Go look at HMX's Pro Guitar mode and then get back to me with that argument.
I'm also praying for EA to pick them up, it seems the only logical solution.

They actually did make the first 3 guitar hero games, Guitar Hero 1, 2 and Rocks The 80s

Well, EA distributed RB 1 to 3, it seems like a plausible move.
Oh, to people telling people to learn to play real guitar. I can't go pick up my guitar right now and play some Metallica or Slayer. I can, however, load up RB or GH and start to play some song on a plastic guitar that would otherwise take years of practice to be able to do properly. The game isn't really meant to be a music simulator, it's just a different way to listen to music.

What if we mixed the two? The result: a fun way to learn basic guitar.

They did mix the two. In RB3 there's a Pro Mode for Guitar. Starting next year, you can buy a real guitar and actually learn how to play it within the game.
why would they ever do that

well, actually, to play those songs take practice. It will generally take a month before any beginner can go through th entire song on easy. And by beginner i mean also never played a string instrument irl
People criticize people for the dumbest reasons. "Stop playing that game and learn a real instrument."
Do you think people actually believe playing it will make them learn it? I play it because its entertaining.
Besides, RB3 teaches how to play certain songs on keyboard, and drums to a certain extent. Soon it'll have a real guitar with it as well. But even with that people are criticizing it.
lol I prefer people playing Rock Band because that makes being able to actually play guitar that much specialer.
also more women for me

for the chicks man
Viacom knows that music games are on the way out, just like DDR years ago. They want to make one last profit.

There's an incredibly elitist remark hidden in there somewhere.
