A giant four-legged robot named Big Dog has gained an extra arm and is now capable of lifting and hurling concrete blocks. The creation of the robot, which was initially designed for military use, is made by US robotics company Boston Dynamics and supported by the US Department of Defence. In a video posted on YouTube on Friday, Big Dog can be seen lifting a 16kg cinderblock and then throwing it roughly seven metres backwards.
Video and apple sauce: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/03/04/15/23/robot-dog-learns-to-throw-concrete-blocks
I've been following updates on Big Dog for the past year and I must say that even though it isn't the best balancer, it's pretty badass. If I'm correct, it's used as a pack mule for the military?
Boston Dynamics is freakin' cool.
can we stop with these kinds of titles I don't think anyone finds them funny
can we stop with these kinds of titles I don't think anyone finds them funny
Sensationalism, it's no fun if we know exactly what to expect.

This is the third time this has been posted in the last 3 days.

As a dyslexic, agnostic insomniac, i have spent many nights awake wondering if dog exists, thank you so much.
Links to back this up?
My mistake, it has been posted two more times, just not in Sensationalist Headlines. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1250827 http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1251114
A giant four-legged robot named Big Dog has gained an extra arm and is now capable of lifting and hurling concrete blocks.
That thing still scares the shit out of me even without the arm. This is just....unnatural. [editline]4th March 2013[/editline] It reminds me of that dog robot thing from the movie red plant.

This is a damn great advance in technology. Even its balancing mechanisms make it look like a dog trying to hold in a shit
It would be really neat to see this thing used for its purpose, being a load carrier/utility robot for the military. I can see all sorts of uses for it. I think that it would make a ton of tasks easier. However, with sequestration now enacted, I doubt it will make its way into the military any time soon.
Still wired into a roomful of computers I see.
Still wired into a roomful of computers I see.
they have versions with sensor packs and onboard computers and power that work just fine outside it's a lot easier to run it on external power during these indoor tests though since the non-tethered version is power by an internal combustion engine. you don't want to be dealing with the noise and fumes all day long in a confined space. [editline]4th March 2013[/editline] here's the untethered one:
Bigdog horrifies me. And I will have honest reason to be paranoid once it's armed.

Honestly, just one that sits as a little cube on your desk, then with a command unfolds in to around a one foot wide and deep robot. I would take that little badass everywhere I went. Just be sitting at dinner at a restaurant and pop him out on the table.
It's really cool to see that they're still actively working on Big Dog I wonder if we'll actually see it go into mass production one day
Does it come with an annoying chick with interesting breasts.
trying to imagine these hunting me at night, would shit me up.
the bit at 0:33 imagine you're having a nice picnic with someone in the middle of nowhere, then suddenly that bursts out the nearest bush, tramples all your food, and keeps walking like it doesn't give a fuck
Number 3 on my "Things To Do Before I Die" list is to do a marathon run with Big Dog and try to beat it going back to base...or before it runs out of gas/battery life.
Do the other robots even lift?
