(Reuters) - Harvard, the richest university in the United States, said on Saturday it would seek to raise some $6.5 billion in donations to fund new academic initiatives and bolster its financial aid program. The fundraising drive by the Cambridge, Massachusetts, institution is believed to be the most ambitious ever undertaken by a university, ahead of one concluded last year by Stanford University in California that raised $6.2 billion.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/21/us-harvard-donations-idUSBRE98K0C620130921
Well they're asking for donations to raise financial aid opportunities, so I don't see any problem with this.
On one hand, I don't mind pursuits in education, but honestly that kind of sum can be spent on some not-so-fortunate facilities.
Where does the preposterous amount of money the students have to pay go? Don't get me wrong, I am all for funding education fully and then some, but I thought that American universities are rolling in dough.
how about lowering the cost of attendance so everybody isn't enslaved to their scholarships instead of giving them more cash with more rules about it

Princeton is better anyways.
That's 6,5 GTA V's worth.

seriously the rules regarding scholarships can be brutal and its crap because you can't do anything about it because you are forced to take them as well as taking loans ontop of that. Scholarships and financial aid mean jack shit now. EVERYONE gets financial aid and scholarships because the original price of going is inflated to bullshit. They only do that shit so that they can say "wow look how much financial aid we give out. we're so kind and nice to our students"
how about lowering the cost of attendance so everybody isn't enslaved to their scholarships instead of giving them more cash with more rules about it
^^^ fucking this so hard
Well they're asking for donations to raise financial aid opportunities, so I don't see any problem with this.
A $32,000,000,000 endowment and they still charge $45,000 per year. Do they really need to get to 40 billion so that they can raise the average financial aid package to more than $12,000 per year? I doubt it
If they're so rich, why do they need to ask for money?
fuck you harvard
Why don't we give them a flying pink elephant and a complementary trip to the moon while we're at it.
If they're so rich, why do they need to ask for money?
Because lots of money + more free money = good. If only you weren't such a bum and went to Harvard you could have figured that out.
What they really need to look at is how much aid Harvard has produced to improve the quality of life/added to our understanding of the world versus how much they want. If it's less, than we should be putting that money into places where it's actually needed. You'd think this would be obvious.

Fuck, at my university we only pay around $1,000 per course we do, so around $8,000 a year for a full-time student (if a student can't afford it they get a loan with the government which they only pay off once they start earning enough). And it's not like it's a shit university, they always go on about being in the top 3% in the world.
American universities are so fucking overpriced I'm on my fourth year and they jack up the tuition each year and let in too many students, then make cutbacks on professors (many 100 level professors are ditched in favor of graduate students) and students. Where the money goes I'll never have any idea, they get more money each year and then make more cutbacks at the same time. Student loans are the next housing bubble
If they're so rich, why do they need to ask for money?
That's why they're rich, they spend other people's money.
Where does the preposterous amount of money the students have to pay go?
Students pay tuition. The money from tuition allows them to purchase more land. Now they need to build on that land, so they up the tuition. They then build the building. They then take the remainder of that money, and buy more land. Now they need to build on that land, and also need to pay upkeep on the buildings they just built, so they raise the tuition. This cycle repeats itself indefinitely; buy land so they have an excuse to raise tuition, and then buy more land so that they have an excuse to raise the tuition. [editline]21st September 2013[/editline] In other words, they have a ton of fucking money, but most of it isn't even remotely liquid because it's all in real estate.

I thought a lot of Universities' tuition goes to paying the professors because they demand an obscene amount of money because of their qualifications. That and research stuff.
You know that if your university is a public university you can look at where the money goes right?
No I didn't know, how do I find this info?

You'd think this would be obvious.
So in your world people should be able to rate individuals/companies/entities and if found unworthy they should have their property confiscated? That's pretty messed up...
how about lowering the cost of attendance so everybody isn't enslaved to their scholarships instead of giving them more cash with more rules about it
College is so expensive because of supply and demand. Lots of people want higher education, but there aren't enough facilities or professors to meet the demand. But what saddens me is that instead of simply increasing the supply, the colleges just increased cost of tuition to astronomical levels.
So the financial aid packages go to the students... who put a large amount of that money into tuition fees... so they want to raise money to give to students who then give most of it straight back to them? Is that how this works?
