Hey, I'm looking to sing. Care to help a fellow musician get started?

As the title says I'm looking to sing. I already write a lot of music, it's just that I've never been vocal about it. Ever.
I don't really know where to start. I've been googling around and I keep stumbling upon sites that give you advice on what to do and what not to do but never anything from there. I'd seriously appreciate your help if you're able to.
What exactly is it that you need help doing?
What you've gotta do is just sing. There's probably tips around the internet to exercise your voice or whatever, but the best thing you can possibly do at the start is SING.
Find a quiet place, probably alone, turn on a song and sing with it. Get to know your voice. Get to know what notes you can hit comfortably and which ones you strain yourself hitting. From there, write melodies for your songs and sing them. Seriously though, just sing. It'll come together.
I'm not a singer myself, but I'm pretty sure you should try to get some vocal practise/lessons before trying to sing.

Which is what I'm starting to do when I get home. The problem with me is I never know if I'm doing anything right or not and I wasn't sure if there was an actual way to approach it. For instance, I have problems holding notes right now and I don't really know how to fix that, even with practicing. I feel like I don't know how to hold the note and based off of my reading on the internet it has to do with letting out a steady stream of air. I know to breathe with my diaphragm, it's just doing things like that is pretty hard for me and, like I said, I don't know if I'm doing it right.

A lot of people say that vocal teachers weren't necessary.
The way I understand it is if you get a vocal teacher, you're essentially paying someone to get to know your voice for you. Practice, practice, practice. If you're having problems holding notes, that sounds like you may be exhaling more than you're using your voice, i.e if you're singing like say... Ben Gibbard. That vocal style (at least for me) takes a lot of practice to do because of the way you use your air.
Maybe other people will have better advice, but honestly, practicing worked for me. I just sang. I'm not the best vocalist ever, but I can hold a note decently. Keep trying and good luck!
Pretty much any singer will tell you that if you want to take it seriously you need some kind of vocal teaching, or you'll pick up horrible habits.
Record yourself so that you can listen to yourself, see what you can do well and what you're not so good at from a listeners perspective.

this this this.
a good vocal instructor can bring you a long way in even a short period of time, and is really essential to your progress as a singer.
