Akira
This is one of the best movies i have ever seen in a long time. I had the DVD for ages, however being anime and all but when i saw IGN's top 25 greatest animation movies i decided to watch it. It is mind blowing and whats even more mind blowing is that the entire film is completely hand-drawn.
AKIRA (アキラ?) is a 1988 anime film written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo based on his hit manga. The film is set in a futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019. While most of the character designs and basic settings were adapted from the original 2182-page manga epic, the restructured plot of the movie differs considerably from the print version, pruning much of the last half of the manga. The film became a hugely popular cult film and is widely considered to be a landmark in Japanese animation and film.
To be honest, i dont know how to describe the plot of the movie without spoiling anything so ill just leave you with a few trailers and you can make your decision

Been a few threads on this one, still deserves all the attention it gets, amazing movie.
The music is so weird yet fitting, whole experience left me going 'wat'
Akira is wonderful. The most poignant scene to me though is the [sp]end where tetsuo turns into a giant blob[/sp]

The scenes where its complete silence however something dramatic is happening are so...powerful
most memerable part of the movie [sp] TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOO [/sp]
I only watched it the other day, thought it was pretty good...
Apple Seed will always be my favourite though.
KAAAANNEEEEDAAAA
TETTTSSUUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Good movie.
you should watch this movie even if you despise anime. it's that good.
I just watched it and thought it was pretty good as a piece of artwork but I didn't understand what was going on with the plot half the time.
Thats one of the few complaints Akira often gets, that its too much content for it to make sense in just one movie. The anime ran for over ten years as far as i know.
I own all the books (the Dark Horse version) and the movie on Blu-Ray. This movie's amazing and everybody should read it/see it. There's a movie in the works apparently. Budget is going to be nuts. Plus trying to create this (kind of a spoiler) and the end would be a couple million.
First things if you haven't seen it.
The books are alot more detailed and are easier to understand. Plus it's longer and the drawing is awesome. Don't go with the dubs, just stick with the subs cause (in my opinion) the voices don't fit the characters.
wait? 2000 plus page manga?
Oh, the live action movie is set to be directed by the brothers who did "The Book of Eli". And they hope for it to be released in 2011.
A 2011 release seems extremely unlikely considering the script is not even finished yet, also its two movies, the first one covering 3 volumes and the second two volumes of the manga.
Awesome film, I hope that the live action version will be good too.
You mean the second covering the last three.

@ Jimmay.
Love this movie, would suggest to anyone, even people who hate anime.

Wikipedia says 4-6 V:v:V
so there's works of a live-action movie going on right now
I think it is overrated.
Still pretty good, but I'm sure it gets overrated because for every rational person who says it's a good movie, there's 100 weeaboos calling it the greatest film of all time because it's Japanese.
One of the only animes I will ever like. This was a superb movie.
so there's works of a live-action movie going on right now
Yup and its gonna be shit. Set in Manhattan, andsupposed to be rated a 12 or 15 so no super gore.
Once again I shall post this video

I loved the film but the ending made me :psyduck:
you should watch this movie even if you despise anime. it's that good.
It's like watching Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. They might be "anime" but they are seriously good films that would be the exact same if animated to a "western" style.
Wikipedia says 4-6 V:v:V
That is 3 numbers 4,5,6.
I think it is overrated.

No, no, and no. That does not work here. Akira is a genuinely good film, it literally started the spread of anime. It lead to the growth of anime across the western world to other countries. It was the pinnacle of Japan's great artistic skill in animation. The only reason we probably even have weeaboos now is because Akira broke open the flood gates. But just because there's a few people out there who go completely nuts over everything Japan does not mean that this is an overrated film. You could say that about everything that has a huge fan base.
I don't have to enjoy something just because it had a big impact on pop culture
I don't have to enjoy something just because it had a big impact on pop culture
No, you don't. But you can't call it overrated neither because that would be a false statement.
Classic.
