• Encyclopedia Dramatica owner could be charged over 'offensive' aboriginal article
The Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission (HREOC) contacted Encyclopedia Dramatica owner Joseph Evers, after 20 indigenous Australians complained about the article's content. Earlier this year the same article — which includes numerous offensive depictions of Aborigines — was removed from Google's search listings after a request from the Human Rights Commission. The article has remained on the Encyclopedia Dramatica website. Joseph Evers, the owner of Encyclopedia Dramatica, published the first page of an email from HREOC on his website's blog today. "This is an initial investigation into charging me, personally, with the violation of Australia’s Racial Discrimination Act," Evers wrote. Although Evers lives in the US, the email cites a previous court case in which a US company was charged under Australian law. "While I act in complete compliance with both the civil and criminal codes of the United States of America, and am assured the right of free speech according to our constitution … I can personally be jailed and fined for the violation of this law." Evers stressed in his latest blog post that he would not be removing the article. "Encyclopedia Dramatica will never be censored in any way," he said. Encyclopedia Dramatica is a satirical website that often goes to extreme lengths to shock readers. In addition to the Aboriginal article, there are several other pieces — including one lampooning the death of Bundaberg girl Trinity Bates — that have been criticised in the past. ninemsn recently interviewed one of the site's top moderators, who defended the site, saying "it is the only collaborative publishing platform on the internet that allows completely free speech." When asked whether the article "Aboriginal" was written by racist bullies, the moderator — who did not want to be named — said that he believed the article to be a comedy piece. "Bullying is when someone gets beaten. Satire is when an article gets written on an Internet comedy website," he said. Encyclopedia Dramatica is believed to be one of the websites that will be banned in Australia under upcoming internet filtering legislation. The online community Anonymous, which is responsible for several hacking attacks against government websites in protest of the proposed filter, is strongly associated with Encyclopedia Dramatica. The email from the Human Rights Commission to Evers cites a 2002 court case in which an Australian businessman was able to sue a US company for defamation over an article published online. Dow Jones & Co Inc ended up paying the defendant, mining entrepreneur Joseph Gutnick, $580,000 in fees and damages. Evers wrote that he had been advised never to return to Australia. "My counsel has advised me that I can never under any circumstances visit my family in Sydney again, nor otherwise make any appearances on Australian soil," he wrote. "Here's to the hidden cost of freedom."
article: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/technology/1028037/encyclopedia-dramatica-owner-could-face-charges This just in: Australian bans aboriginals EDIT: also mass racism bannings

It doesn't matter, for we have the maxim gun and they do not.
I've read it Enjoyed it too, like every other ed article not to be taken seriously
It seems like all Aboriginals do is complain about the stereotypes when they should actually be trying not to act them out. (User was banned for this post ("Racism" - TH89))
I'm pretty sure that without sites such as Encyclopedia Dramatica to take a stand and remind us of the free speech of the internet we wouldn't have it at all.
I really don't even know about these stereotypes they are talking about. it sounds like Australia is just bickering with itself and everyone else in the world is like "wtf are you so mad about?" All I know is that Aboriginals made and played didgeridoos. If that's what is so offensive then they can go jump off a cliff down unduh'
I hope we do ban boongs, fucking sick of them! Some boong women started yelling at the apartments across the road at fkn 3am "OI JAMIE IM GOING TO BE FUCKING LATE FOR COURT YOU DUMB SLUT!!!!"
I'm going to set fire to all centrelink places, if I kill centrelink all abos will soon die!
Hahah, better pray TH89 doesn't understand that one.
Because ED is a serious and competent source of knowledge. :jerkbag:
Aboriginals complain about everything.
Well i was unemployed for about a month last year and I had to visit centrelink twice or so, both occasions I witnessed abos trying to fight the centrelink staff, they were quickly put in their place though and kicked out. Funny thing is though the security never did anything, they always let the staff deal with them :/ [editline]06:56PM[/editline] Oh btw im not racist, I just hate the bad abos. There are plenty of good ones, like my old neighbours they were like a family of 10 and still bought me presents for christmas when i was a kid, they were very nice I wish they were all like that. I think I stopped liking them when I saw their Half-Life page anyways.
Fucking hell I need my daily ED shot If you dont like a website, dont go on it! simple as that
I think I stopped liking them when I saw their Half-Life page anyways.
It's satire. I find the whole site pretty funny. Their article on FP even rings pretty true.
That's funny, I thought our government didn't let Aborigines access the internet.
I guess you could say... ... Australia got troll'd
There is a huge difference between a major financial company and a private individual. They bent international law to prosecute a major American company, but I doubt they could get away with doing that to an individual, though this is Australia we're talking about. That specific case apparently changed the legal definition of "published location" in Australian law. Under that ruling, anything that anyone in Australians can see can be considered "published in Australia" and subject to Australian law, regardless of the country of origin.
Shit, Australia Government. You crazy.
Yeaaaaah.
someone got linked to the offended page, DIDN'T THEY "omg i am offended! OH GOD WAT BAN BAN"
Anon? A community? I'd never call it that. Ever. (Unless there was big money involved). ED is made of troll and facepalm. People shouldn't take it seriously.
Well, it's the closest thing to reality I've ever seen it called in a news article. (Other namings range from "terrorist organisation" to "anti-scientology group")
Just for thought, Encylclopedia Dramatica is going to be one of the banned websites when Aus goes all communist with our net censorship. So Free Speech will be Banned.

This pisses me off. Encyclopedia Dramatica takes the piss out of everyone, yet people (all over the world, not just in Australia) only get annoyed when it is about minorities.

Oh shit oh shit I helped edit that one months ago EDIT: My government is going to ban me :commissar:
