Hey look a deeply unfunny man desperately trying to make humor talking about a deeply unfunny film desperately trying to make humor
I sure feel intense nostalgia for this bad film that came out in 2016.

In a comeback video he announced he stopped doing just old nostalgic movies and is doing new films as well alongside requested movies to review. They want it, and now he can deliver. Also does FP now just shit on NC now? It's the YT thumbnail isn't it? Always easy to nitpick.

If he picked apart a movie just using clips from it, it'd be fine, but actually having skits disrupts the flow of it.
True, but there hasn't been a skit-based review in a while in 2017. Methinks it has to do with WB or whoever doing strikes on reviews with clips from the movie. Nearly every single clip of Suicide Squad is either in 360p filmed with a toaster or the scene is in HD, but its flipped or changed the pitch. I don't really see a way around it other that "make actually funny jokes in the skits."

In fact, one of his most famous videos which was on The Room, he had to teleport himself to the future in order for the film to be considered "nostalgic".

Always easy to nitpick.
I've watched NC since his very early days and I keep watching him both as tradition and because I cling onto a small bit of hope that he may get good again. Doug's skits are unfunny and the character of the Nostalgia Critic has become unfunny as a result. He was better when he just made fun of movies without trying to be a filmmaker himself. He's either just not willing to listen to criticism or flat out fucking bad because the same problems from his old skits are still present now and in some cases have gone worse. And the weird thing is that he has repeatedly shown that he knows how comedy works on a theoretical level. He has all the tools and the knowledge to make it work but obsesses over doing the same unfunny shit that does exactly what he manages to pinpoint consistently as bad in those films he talks about. It's the literal god damn definition of insanity.
well ok this intro is cringey and didn't need to be 45 seconds long, but at least he gets right to the reviewing with no sk- oh wait the entire fucking review is a skit
well ok this intro is cringey and didn't need to be 45 seconds long, but at least he gets right to the reviewing with no sk- oh wait the entire fucking review is a skit
Something tells me he REALLY misses Demo Reel and just can't let it go.
It's the skits. If he picked apart a movie just using clips from it, it'd be fine, but actually having skits disrupts the flow of it.
Yeah. He always had this problem and it's a pretty common thing among internet reviewers because many of them are essentially aspiring movie-makers themselves. But while most people kinda accepted it back then, after the whole death and revival thing NC just went totally ballistic with the skits. Thing is, having skits isn't even a bad thing, it's just a problem when the skits completely disrupt the flow of the review. Skits that are well integrated into the review can even be really good if they don't drag on too long. Like the skits in the Ultima 1 episode of Spoony's Ultima Retrospective series, which are in my opinion a great example of skits that actually improved the review by visualizing some of the ridiculous elements of the game.

Is he, like, unable to show footage of suicide squad or something? Is there some sort of copyright issue there?

It's a delicate balance you have to hit that many content creators have struggled in the past to get right, but while someone like Jontron managed to get their shit together and actually balance out the content pretty well Doug managed to someone stay stuck at the exact same point in his career for god knows how many years now.
Is he, like, unable to show footage of suicide squad or something? Is there some sort of copyright issue there?
Yeah, pretty much. He did the same with Fury Road. Doug really needs to stop doing modern movies, because then this happens and the entire review suffers as a result.
He also does these segments called "1st Viewing" where he records himself and his brother watching the film for the first time and getting ideas for the actual review. It's kind of like "MSK-3000 lite".
Yeah, pretty much. He did the same with Fury Road.
Man why even bother then It's like if Jontron's videos just had the camera focused on him at all times with no gameplay
Is he, like, unable to show footage of suicide squad or something? Is there some sort of copyright issue there?
Yeah, actually, one of the big reasons NC started doing clipless reviews was specifically because of copyright issues, this was mentioned in his "Where's The Fair Use" videos. A lot of online content creators, even big youtubers, have been having issues with big companies abusing the copyright system despite their content falling under Fair Use. I've heard of situations where a video would do a parody of a song, even if they weren't playing the original song and were just speaking the lyrics, and they'd still get removed. There was even a situation where a popular anime reviewer got their video removed when it was literally just him sitting on his porch talking and nothing else. As a result, I personally am not as bothered by the clipless reviews; I understand that this is simply the only way they can make videos without being taken down. Doug is trying to run a small business, and businesses need to make money to survive.
Wonder if it's as bad or worse (or better) than this? This one is mercifully shorter.

The lights are off, the camera angles are terrible, the color correction is bland and usually terribly contrasted, white balance is frequently off, the audio is subpar and that's all just at the top of my head. Assuming Doug is running this show and the other shows like a company, he should seriously invest in hiring someone who knows all these things, and get some better equipment because if the skits rise in quality a bit, I'd probably be much more okay with them.

Everything from the way the jokes are written, to where they come in, to how they're delivered is just bad. Plus, he makes way too many things into skits, when they would be better explained by him sitting down, talking and making points like a normal human being (aka what got him famous in the first place?) It's not that you can't make points in a rehearsed comedy format, but this "style" of skit was created in reviews where they function as dumb little side jokes and nothing more. Look at James Rolfe or RLM, almost none of their skits are made to stand up on their own, only complement the rest of the review. No one's watching the AVGN because they want to see him punch a dude in a cheap ass Bugs Bunny costume - that's just a wacky little punchline for everything that comes before that. It amazes me that Doug still hasn't realized this
