how about using multiple atmospheric lenses and a laser to sorta bounce the high powered laser around obstacles? Does that somehow work?
Bae sure stepped up a notch
It's fucking weird seeing a video about using a deflector shield to defend against laser based attacks.
Wonder if it'd be possible to use the lens to focus sunlight, solar powered laser. :v:
this is fucking ridiculous lmao
do we have a resident physicist to tell us whether this is realistic or Dahir Insaat?
do we have a resident physicist to tell us whether this is realistic or Dahir Insaat?
Well it's from BAE Presumably they don't just make this up
do we have a resident physicist to tell us whether this is realistic or Dahir Insaat?
BAE tends to forget that the rest of us still live in 2017
do we have a resident physicist to tell us whether this is realistic or Dahir Insaat?
From BAE's press release
[Laser Developed Atmospheric Lens] is a complex and innovative concept that copies two existing effects in nature; the reflective properties of the ionosphere and desert mirages. The ionosphere occurs at a very high altitude and is a naturally occurring layer of the Earth’s atmosphere which can be reflective to radio waves – for example it results in listeners being able to tune in to radio stations that are many thousands of miles away. The radio signals bounce off the ionosphere allowing them to travel very long distances through the air and over the Earth’s surface. The desert mirage provides the illusion of a distant lake in the hot desert. This is because the light from the blue sky is ‘bent’ or refracted by the hot air near the surface and into the vision of the person looking into the distance. ...DAL simulates both of these effects by using a high pulsed power laser system and exploiting a physics phenomena called the ‘Kerr Effect’ to temporarily ionise or heat a small region of atmosphere in a structured way. Mirrors, glass lenses, and structures like Fresnel zone plates could all be replicated using the atmosphere, allowing the physics of refraction, reflection, and diffraction to be exploited.
Considering they did develop the concept based on actual scientific concepts, like the Kerr effect, and had it evaluated, it should be possible, but the fact the thing firing it looks like the Skylon might be a hint to how far off it is. :v:

"My laser beats your laser"
If someone were to remove all the captions and tell me that this is an original advertisement for a 2000's era Command and Conquer game I would totally believe them.
BAE like to combat their own systems, they're working on methods of using high powered tracking lasers to super heat components in aircrafts and missiles to disable them but at the same time they're working ways around their own system. They're trying to get technologically ahead of themselves. Also yes, ignoring the laughable representation, this is possible presuming they're talking about heating parts of the atmosphere to forms some kind of concave to act like a lens and not 3D printing some bullshit it mid-air as they're showing it :v: similar idea to how the moon sometimes looks closer and huge, it's all because of the angle we see it through the atmosphere. Clever shit.

I'd imagine they could actually make such a vehicle since it'd be a drone and could be incredibly lightweight.
my exgirlfriend's father is literally THE safety director of BAE, and these guys do -not- make a claim without knowing the hard data behind it it might look goofy here but this is some serious tech
I don't think most of you understand just what BAE Systems are... Also, they released this: Among other things, BAE also designed this:
All of this is may seem wild and incomprehensible to most (and mainly due to the utterly bizarre presentation), but remember: This is BAE Systems we're talking about. You know, the people behind half of the western world's military technology in use today? While an amazing record is no vaccine against poor decisions, it's incredibly unlikely they would even be mentioning this unless it were a real possibility.
I think the closest thing to real-life sci-fi tech BAE has accomplished IMO is their thermal cloak:
Multi billion dollar company, can't afford some good looking CGI presentation.
Multi billion dollar company, can't afford some good looking CGI presentation.
Probably got one random intern to shit out this presentation with Unity in under a week.
Considering these videos are normally shown at conventions for people looking to buy this tech, they aren't interested in the CGI quality, just what the product does. BUT, you'd think in this day and age something much better could have been created so easily...
I actually followed up with my exes dad today about it and he laughed so hard at your guy's reaction to the video, so good work everyone lol
Multi billion dollar company, can't afford some good looking CGI presentation.
in the defense world the quality of the CGI is inversely proportional to the true quality of the demonstrated product
I'm all for it. Whatever we need to beat the Nod.
Multi billion dollar company, can't afford some good looking CGI presentation.
They didn't get to be a multi billion dollar company by wasting money on fancy graphics.
