I'm starting to plan out a big weight shedding of 2013 and I figured I'd ask here. Would biking around (of course with running mixed into the routine) be as beneficial as running? I figure it's a great cardio workout, but is it as good to utilize for weight loss?
I'm trying to think of fun things to do to lose weight, rather than have to dread looking forward to running (not really entertaining for me, but biking is great).
Less strenuous, more fun.
I love cycling butvrunning feels like a chore.
Running is superior overall.
larger, more natural range of motion.
But biking is more fun, so the average person is usually more motivated to put effort into it.
I suggest you start with biking, because it is more easy on your knees than running, and it is more fun to start with.
When you get more fit, and your legs and knees get used to exercising, you could switch to running, because of the larger range of motion.

Cool. Thanks for the info everyone :).
dont ride a bike youll get bitch tits!!!!1!
running is a lot of impact for your knees, and will result in a lot of wear and tear in your knee cartilage over a long period time (see: Any professional basketball player ever). Granted, pro athletes run a lot more than your average person, but biking is less stress on your legs in terms of impact taken on your knees.
Take it from me, a person who loves to play basketball. My knees fucking HURT if I play too long, and I've noticed as I've got older I can't play as long.
You can get a great workout on a bike if you push it as hard as you would running, and like other's have said, its much safer on your body in the long run. My knees are so screwed from skateboarding, all I can do now for exercise is bike.
For running this is a very good plan to help you get your heart rate up without overexerting your feet, knees, calves and shins as you build up those muscles. It's also fun to see if you can push yourself past what the program entails. I discovered it in July and by week 7 I could run 2.5 miles in 20 minutes.

And everyone else is correct that running too much and too hard just destroys your knees and is also damaging to your shins. The obvious solution is to just not run when you start to feel excessive pain and to build up your muscle strength and endurance. Hope this helps.
Yesterday I saw a bike which you powered by walking/running on. It was awesome.

As a man who bikes on average 5 days a week every month for several hours a day for the past ten years of my life I can tell you that riding a bike is infinitely better than walking/running
Every time before I ride my bike I pack no less than six liters of water and several nut-bars so that I can replenish my energy levels once they get depleted. In addition to packing copious amounts of food, I also take with me plenty of small items that come in handy when I'm outside, such as small tweezers and alcohol towelettes (in case I need to self-sanitize) and put them in a fanny pack that I wear around my waist. I actually place most of the weight around my ankles and thighs so that my legs get more of a workout + cardio
Biking with your friends is also fun: if you're in a group you'll always have one try-hard who lags behind the pack (and incidentally they're always the ones that earn under $85K a year lol)

but really tho there's nothing quite like it. the feeling of the air breezing past your ears as you're speeding down a slope trying to contain your bodily fluids is exhilarating, and sometimes when the bikeseat wedges into my perineum after a while I'll orgasm all over my tight cyclist shorts

As far as i've understood, basketballers do not hurt their knees because of the impacts, but because of the quick turns that twist the knee joint. For the same reason bowlers often get a bad knee (usually the left one if they throw with their right hand). Actually, you barely get any hard "impacts" on a steady low or medium intensity run if you got a good running technique. Also keep in mind minor stress to the bone is important to keep them strong.
Also think of it logically, we've been sculpted through natural selection over hundreds of thousands of years to RUN and WALK. Not cycle.
tell me lies make it sound good make it sound gooooooooooooooooood

Welp, now I never want to ride a bike again.
Took me a couple of reads to realize you were being sarcastic and not a douchebag.
Get a single speed and it makes it fun and a better workout.

Fixed is fun, I held out for a long time, but now it's my main mode of transportation.
Like running, it can be harder on the knees, ride with a front brake (at least) if you want to save them.
