• Gender/Sex Based Bathrooms

This turned into a massive discussion in SH (http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1231943), so I figured it would make sense to bring the topic here. Do you think that bathrooms should be separated by gender (psychological) or by sex (physiological)? Or for that matter, separated at all? I personally believe that separating bathrooms by either is rather silly. Seeing the opposite genders genitalia wont damage you. Some people will argue that they they think children shouldn't be exposed to such a topic, but no matter how you slice it, seeing the opposite sex's genitalia isn't going to damage you in the slightest. If anything, it would promote equality among children as they will be able to understand the topic of gender and sex. Suddenly, they wouldn't have to break some sort of taboo to become educated on an obviously important biological issue. However, if we DO stick to the separation system, I think that it should be based on sex, just because bathrooms are usually equipped for the specified sex (urinals for example). Separating by gender kinda defeats the purpose of separating bathrooms, (assuming the reason is preventing "sexual tension").
All separating bathrooms is doing is perpetuating the stereotypes that men can't control themselves and all women are victims.
I feel it's more for privacy, and also to keep an influx of certain people into certain bathrooms. In my own experience, men's restrooms tend to be the dirtiest, and when I have stumbled into women's restrooms on accident, they tend to be cleaner. family restrooms (restrooms specialized for both genders) tend to be in between two mediums. I for one support separation of bathrooms, as I don't want women to hear the ferocious roar of me shitting.

Further more I don't know if you realize this but women can shit just as ferociously as you can. Wow, never thought I'd say that sentence ever in my life.

We don't think about it in the long run. We shit, we leave. And as for privacy, we normally don't take to staring at each other's danglers when we go, and I'm quite sure that without stalls, women wouldn't be commenting on each other's flesh tunnels.

Personally, I would feel uncomfortable going into a rest room where there are women around. I'm shy enough as it is around women outside of rest rooms, I don't need to be overburdened with such anxiety when I'm in a place where I want privacy already.
At my university we don't have gender seperated bathrooms. So it's JUST Stalls. So it's no issue. There, job done 8D
I think that it's fine for an establishment such as a restaurant to have two unisex bathrooms instead of a male and female bathroom. Plus, it means that if one room is occupied it won't make it awkward to use the other one.

I'm going to go ahead and assume a large number of women wouldn't want to be changing in the same room as men. And men, while probably a fewer amount, would also not appreciate that. I already said it before. Have a male, female and unisex change room. Or stalls like one user mentioned.
The original thread was talking about locker rooms guys. (or gals or both w/e I feel like I'm going to be smited after reading through all that shit) I'm all for shared restrooms but what about when people need to change?

While most men don't want to look at some random guy's floppy dick pissing, I doubt it would be the same for women. Vice versa as well. It's just to keep it the way it's supposed to be. a restroom, where you just take a shit, piss, and leave. it's just to separate sexual interests further, so incase something ever could happen, that chance would be halved.
Your psychological gender (fancy term for gay\straight) has nothing to do with it. It's so people can have privacy. If they were same sex bathrooms, men would stand ontop of the toilet and look over. Vice versa might happen but because of the stereotype that "all men are sex hungry beasts and women are rape victims" it's unlikely. Also, men's bathrooms are dirty as shit. Keep women out of this, NOBODY deserves to deal with what unspeakable horrors can be seen in there. Fuck no. Shit smothered on the walls, shit stuck to the roof dripping down slowly, and the floor always has a fresh coat of piss. I guess it depends. In some places you can have a shared bathroom system, but elsewhere you can have separate bathrooms for men and women. I don't see any problem in neither. Obviously inside hotel rooms or in your home, the bathroom is shared. But a restaurant or a busy bar-club, separating bathrooms also separates the people who need to use the bathroom in two, which is probably a good solution from some club owner's perspective. And this is probably a non-issue for most majority of people anyway..
Things are better the way they are since they can dedicate more space to urinals for he mens toilets and sit down ones for womens toilets.
Anyone here been to France? there's a lot if not most public bathrooms there are are unisex and once you get over the taboo it's not that strange. I think for it to be accepted you would have to have just cubicals which obviously take up more space than say a trough, which can cut queue time. Many women might not feel comfortable queuing for a cubical next to a line of men using the trough
washrooms should be seperated based on biological sex. The whole basis being the deal with the genitals of the person using it and stuff. I mean urinals were meant to be used by people with penises. How is a person with a vagina supposed to stand there and use it and be comfortable?

I see absolutely no reason for bathrooms to be seperated in the first place. If you made them all stalls, nobody would be showing their ungodly, child-molesting-at-the-mere-mention-of-it anatomy to anyone but the bowl.
The whole idea of public restrooms bothers me. I just simply don't use them, and I'm fortunate enough to not need to.

Also it's not that hard to provide for trans people if you have one of those "Family restrooms" anybody can use.

I understand that is definitely an over-exaggeration, but at its core it's still similar reasoning. There are nearly no reasons to have gender separated bathrooms, however.
Anybody ever notice how fucking long it takes women to use the bathroom compared to men? It's nice typically not having to wait to use the urinal. However, women have to go through the whole stall ordeal. On top of that, stalls are fucking gross. Guys piss all over the toilet and crap in the mens. They wont even lift the seat. Women will have to prepare their seat way more often if there are men pissing all over the seat they'd normally use.
Can you not have urinals next to stalls and still keep a unisex bathroom?
I don't get it, what's wrong with having separated bathrooms? I may have missed something here, but all I see are posts explaining that unisex bathrooms wouldn't be 'so bad' or that they just take some getting used to. What's the actual point of switching to unisex bathrooms, though?
