The president plans to unveil his nominee during an 8 p.m. EST televised address from the White House.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/01/31/trump-to-announce-supreme-court-pick.html
Hillary Clinton has been nominated to the Supreme Court! I can't believe it!
Steve Bannon new Supreme Court Justice
I'm going to choke you both out.
Steve Bannon for Supreme Court Justice! Because he isn't pulling enough strings to try and destroy America already!
It's going to be himself.
It's going to be a fuckwad who fucks over justice for generations. I'd be surprised if it's anyone decent, though that's a 0.01% possibility.
I don't remember who this fox dude is, but he looks like 2 face the way he's cut off my screen.
Don't think I'll ever get used to Trump walking out after being introduced as the President of the United States.
"man of his word" Ok Trump Ok.
If Trump is consistent in anything, at least he's consistent in his hand gestures.
I like how he says "When Justice Scalia passed away last February..." as if it was inevitable that Obama's pick would be cockblocked into oblivion
"man of his word" Ok Trump Ok.
To be fair, he has been keeping many promises...
Judge Niel Gorsuch
It's going to be a fuckwad who fucks over justice for generations. I'd be surprised if it's anyone decent, though that's a 0.01% possibility.
Gorsuch is pretty much a younger, prettier Scalia, so yeah.
Gorsuch is a proponent of originalism, the idea that the Constitution should be interpreted as the Founding Fathers would have interpreted it, and of textualism, the idea that statutes should be interpreted literally, without considering the legislative history and underlying purpose of the law
For some reason I don't think this is how it's going to go down
This is gorsuch a shock
Days like this I wish we had Austin posting again.
Here's a washington post article on him, still digging https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/courts_law/neil-gorsuch-naturally-equipped-for-his-spot-on-trumps-supreme-court-shortlist/2017/01/28/91b00a46-e49b-11e6-a453-19ec4b3d09ba_story.html?utm_term=.9474cbaf65cb
For some reason I don't think this is how it's going to go down
Its a clever way to say, "Idiot who doesn't understand the constitution is an evolving document designed to change and adapt to new circumstances."
From some quick research, he seems like more of the same. Which is better than I expected, to be honest. Meh.
From my digging, he seems like another Scalia. Not better, but not worse.
Pretty much Scalia 2.0 as predicted, anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia/assisted-suicide and heavy on states' rights. Constitution as written and interpreted by founding fathers, not adapting to changing times.
Man he's young as hell for a Supreme court Judge.
I thought he was pro euthanasia and pro abortion?
So he's basically a fucking wacko, right?
I thought he was pro euthanasia and pro abortion?
Wikipedia says the exact opposite.
I thought he was pro euthanasia and pro abortion?
He wrote a book about how he says it's terrible.
What I've found so far is that he is likely pro-life, is decidedly anti-euthanasia/suicide rights, very big on states rights, is very deeply invested into religious freedom ("Gorsuch’s opinions favoring the owners of the Hobby Lobby craft stores and the nonprofit religious group Little Sisters of the Poor took the same sort of broad reading of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act as the Supreme Court’s conservative majority" [x]). I'm not happy about it, obviously, but time will tell in how he uses his power. He seems like a less bold and brash Scalia.
Gorsuch is simply a conservative, he wants to follow in Scalias footsteps. Smart man, very well educated, but has very strong conservative opinions. Not the end of the world but it's not the desired result.
He wrote a book about how he says it's terrible.
http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8317.html
After assessing the strengths and weaknesses of arguments for assisted suicide and euthanasia, Gorsuch builds a nuanced, novel, and powerful moral and legal argument against legalization, one based on a principle that, surprisingly, has largely been overlooked in the debate--the idea that human life is intrinsically valuable and that intentional killing is always wrong. At the same time, the argument Gorsuch develops leaves wide latitude for individual patient autonomy and the refusal of unwanted medical treatment and life-sustaining care, permitting intervention only in cases where an intention to kill is present.
I dunno, seems kinda open to that question. Also sounds like hes against the death penalty.
