• Moving to the United Kingdom

I'll be moving to the UK in the next 3-6 months (granted my visa application gets accepted, why wouldn't it?) and I want to know a little about what to expect. I'll be going on my own though I do have a few relatives in London and Bristol, but I won't be staying with them cause let's face it, there's no fun traveling around the world to stay with family members. I'm from Australia so I should be able to get into the country quiet easily, money is not a problem by the time I leave I will have a little over 15,000 AUD which given the exchange rate should still be enough for a month or two without work, I'll be on the Tier 5 YMS visa so I'll only be there for 2 years max. Personally I'm looking at hitting London up as sort of a base camp as I'm a chef and there's a lot more job opportunities in London for chefs. For the first few months I will probably see as much of the uk/europe as I can so what I'd like to know is stuff like the nightlife, where good places to live while still being close enough to an inner city and what the culture is like towards us Aussies ( I have heard good things ) I'm pretty good at meeting new people and making friends so that shouldn't be a problem as I'm a pretty confident and laid back person. Has anyone on Facepunch done this before by themselves? I've used the search and I've seen a few people moving around to study but not so many people moving just for a change of atmosphere. Anyway, if anyone could give me a rundown for what to expect that would be sweet. Source
he's a chef. he makes his own
This guy knows the deal.
Remember it is a lot more expensive to live in London than a lot of places in England. Last time I went down there I had a burger from Burger King in the train station and it cost twice as much as it does up here. [editline]13th March 2013[/editline] Birmingham is a very nice place in terms of nightlife (with Broad Street and all that).
Yeah, hitting up London is not the best idea mate. Your funds will disappear as if you're throwing it into a black hole. Consider somewhere like Manchester or Birmingham instead - Every city in Britain has pretty good nightlife.
Go to the lake district for a bit if you get the chance, it's probably my favourite place in the country. Otherwise any major city has good nightlife.
I don't trust your source, sorry.

Wasn't there a rule of not pasting the whole source in the OP? I would snip if I were you.

Also, is there anywhere to buy Vegemite in the UK?
Thanks for the insight. Also, is there anywhere to buy Vegemite in the UK?
Bovril or Marmite. [sp]Hated it forever[/sp]
Bovril or Marmite. [sp]Hated it forever[/sp]
They aren't the same as vegemite. Marmite is made from yeast extract, Bovril from beef extract and vegemite from vegetable extract. Only the first two are common, but I'm pretty sure it is possible to buy vegemite.
Bovril or Marmite. [sp]Hated it forever[/sp]
They just won't do, I'll have to suss out some sort of underground market for the Vegemite trade, or start one myself, I can see it being quite lucrative, what with the amount of Aussies that actually travel to the United Kingdom.
London is great. There are definitely plenty of opportunities as a Chef here and the nightlife is great. It's also very multicultural, so you'll find yourself meeting people from all over the world when you're out.
This is something I am going to attempt to do next year, if I can keep my job long enough to save enough to do it. Although not going to have the issue of getting myself a visa as I'm a British citizen. I'm considering moving to the northern Areas rather than the Southern areas though. Anyone got tips of the absolute minimum amount I could move there for if, everything goes according to plan, I will be sharing a house with someone.
I've never been a fan of london. Great job opportunities yes. But after living there for a few years, and moving to somewhere else in England, you go cold turkey from Exhaust fumes and start sucking on running car exhausts....No just me? But seriously aside from that it's just horribly overpriced, and one side of london isn't all that nice... Although saying that Oxford where I live isn't exactly very nice anyway, at-least where I live.

I've picked London even though I know I'll be paying twice as much for everything because I like living in big, loud cities filled with people.
I'm pretty sure you can rock up at the Aussie Embassy and buy it off them. You could in the 80's at least. May i ask the reason you are leaving our great nation?
Working as a chef and wanting a nightlife good luck with that one.
Working as a chef and wanting a nightlife good luck with that one.
As hard as you may find it to believe, some of us chefs have perfected the art of being awake all night while still being able to do our jobs properly without sleep, plus in Australia the night doesn't really start till 11:30 - 12, I'm assuming it would be the same or close in the uk? Don't come here lol Why do people always choose London, its crowded and full of Londoners... ugggggggggggghh North of England ftw.
I'm not from the commonwealth or any other countries with any tie to Britain; how does one such as myself emigrate? Seems like if you're not from the EU, a citizen of a commonwealth country, or a Turk, they don't want you.
If you see large groups of youths in tracksuits approach them with a friendly manner and ask how they're doing
whatever you do don't go to derby or the east midlands in general in fact
