Story time every other day around 9 PM Eastern
The young man, walked through the heavy flapping doors into the back room of the Grocery Store's Meat Department, where he now worked as of a few days ago. This was to be his third ever shift at his new job, and he was scedhuled to recieve training from somebody. Looking around the room, he only saw a figure much taller than him in a red butcher's coat, leaning over a table on the opposite side of the room. The young man nervously spoke up,unsure if this was the person he was supposed to talk to. "Hi?" he asked.
The figure turned around, and smiled at the young man. "Would you happen to be the new guy?"
The young man nodded. "Yep. As of May 31st."
The figure walked over to the young man. "Well then, I have a present for you." The figure held out a black baseball cap, seemingly identical to the one the young man was wearing at the moment. "Notice the front of it."
The young man leaned slightly and looked at the front. Instead of the word "METRO" to signify the company he worked for, there was an orange sticker reading "NEW".
"You have to wear this instead of that hat for the next two weeks."
The young man groaned.
The figure introduced himself as Tyler. Before the young man could respond with his own name however, Tyler interupted saying "For the first two weeks, your name around here will be Newbie."
The Young Man blinked. "Newbie?"
"Newbie." Tyler repeated. "Everybody is new here at some point. That's why you have that hat. I wore it when I got hired."
The young man looked the Orange sticker. Tyler had to be lying. There was no way management told him to do this every time someobody was hired. And yet, the sticker was pretty faded, and the hat worn out and dirty. "So, I wear this hat for two weeks?"
"You're not a good listener, are you?" Tyler asked. "That's not a good trait if you want to get anywhere in this company."
The Young man pulled off his old hat, and replaced it with the one Tyler gave to him.
"Alright, Newbie. Let's get down to business."
For the next few days, The Young Man had differant shifts with differant people. No matter whoever the person was, be it Tyler, a manager or even somebody younger than him, the young man was always called Newbie. This changed 10 days after Tyler first gave him the hat.
The Young Man walked through the heavy flapping doors, not particularly content about having to do whatever Tyler said once again, but when he saw somebody standing at the opposite side of the room with Tyler, his mood shifted to curiousity. Tyler turned at the sound of the doors opening.
"Newbie, you've been replaced."
The Young Man felt shocked. "Somebody's taking my job!?"
Tyler laughed. "No, somebody's taking your hat." He pointed at the "NEW" hat that he recieved earlier.
The Young Man took his hat off and handed it to Tyler. "So will you call me by my actual name now?"
Tyler placed the hat on the head of the very short boy standing next to him. "No, here's your new hat."
Tyler stretched his hand out and handed the Young Man another hat, almost identical to the one he gave him before, though it was brand new. The sticker on the front read "FRESH".
"You're still 'Fresh', so to speak, so I'm calling you Fresh."
Fresh looked at his new hat. It was better than Newbie.
A few weeks later, even after Fresh had replaced the 'Fresh' hat Tyler had given him, everybody still called him by his nickname. He had another shift with Tyler, and halfway through it, he decided to bring this up.
"Why does everybody still call me Fresh?"
Tyler turned. "The name just sort of stuck. I gave you that name because Newbie showed up a bit earlier than intended."
"So I'm Fresh forever?"
Tyler shrugged. "I guess."
"If I gave you a nickname, would everybody start calling you by it?"
Tyler shrugged again. "If it sticks."
Fresh stroked his chin. "Tye?"
"Sure. I'm Tye and you're Fresh."
Fresh held out his hand. "Nice to meet you, Tye."
Tye didn't shake Fresh's hand. "Nice to meet you, Fresh."
This all happened over a year ago, so I can only really write down what I remember. If I had better long term memory of really minor details, then I'd be able to make this longer/more in-depth. Sorry, I guess.
Good read.
Waiting for the mandatory 'Cool Story, Bro!' post.
Edit: ... and there it is.
Cool story, Bro!
In all seriousness it was quite a good read, keep it up!
Cool Story, Bro
You aren't a very good story teller
Is there a moral? Or something?
My nickname at my work is FNG
So what happened to the other Newbie?
Glorious exposition, comrade.

He got fired. After he stopped being the Newbie he was called McFail.
Riveting.
I was expecting some kind of horror story, but then it was all anti-climatic.
