To be honest I feel that Microtransactions are complete shit on how they're starting to spread into full games.
Especially when it's the gambling variety.
But I feel that Jimquisition is slightly over-exaggerating the effect.
overwatch has the best microtransactions possible. You don't need anything you can buy, you can also earn the things you want without paying. I'm tempted to buy some boxes just because blizzard should be commended for such a level headed system.
Honestly I am fine with microtransactions so long as they don't affect the gameplay directly outside cosmetic. I can kinda get where he is coming from with the since the game isn't free to play it doesn't make as much sense, but honestly I rarely let it affect my personal gameplay expirence.
The only thing I will say is that the lootbox method of obtaining microtrasaction items is stupid.

But what Jim Sterling talks about is that it progressively gets harder and harder.
In the future you might be a high enough level where a full days game will level you up once. However Blizzard might release new skins with maps, voice lines, etc.
The problem is then is how are you supposed to get them? By buying boxes of course. That is if you haven't been spent all your currency, have lootboxes sitting by the side.
It's unfair in the long run, imho.

they arent the best microtransactions possible because the usage of lootcrates exploits gambling tendencies. just because they're cosmetic doesnt mean they arent cancerous.
Actually. The max experience you need to level up caps at 22000 exp at level 23. So if you are with a group you could be able to get a loot box every hour.
So getting loot boxes only becomes the hardest at Level 23. After that it stays pretty consent.
I don't own Overwatch or even care for Blizzard games, but you can tell hes a reviewer, I don't think he notices it, but he gets a lot of games free (I know not all) so buying map packs and all that isn't something that effects him, so having skins behind a random paywall is 100% terrible to him. But I think having maps and heros that cost money will be terrible, since well, thats spiting the community
But from what I heard, the system they have for the free skin unlocks is p. bad, maybe they should copy Halo 5's system
Getting boxes takes longer progressively up to level 23, from there you can pretty easily get one every hour and a half or so. Also, as you get more and more skins and sprays the chance of getting duplicates increases. Duplicates are automatically transferred into coin that you can use to "purchase" the skins you want. So as you level more and more you will actually be earning more coins that you can use to spend on exactly what you want. I think it's a pretty well thought out system.
My problem with loot boxes is that the loot they drop is crap. Nobody wants shitty sprays in place of where a skin could've been.
Microtransactions on top of a 60 dollar game are kinda shitty. I played it at my dads house and had a blast playing reaper but the whole microtransactions and crate thing just left me feeling off. Why not take the call of duty route where skins and shit are unlockable (in reference to weapon camos, fuck black ops 3 and it's hero skin crate system) and further costumes can be bought individually.
But fuck why do that when impressionable 13 year olds who have access to their piggy bank can play and dump even more money into your game.
My problem with loot boxes is that the loot they drop is crap. Nobody wants shitty sprays in place of where a skin could've been.
Well crap loot makes getting something good much more exciting.
Unless you have to pay for content that actually affects the game IE maps or characters then what is the problem? If you've got some kind of gambling addiction then that's not entirely the fault of the games you play there is still a component in that issue dictated by you alone.
Also there's already plenty of 120+ level players and thats just two weeks since release. Give it few months and there will loads of level 500+ people, which means 500 lootcrates (and more). And after getting 500 lootcrates you would probably have anything you would ever want and get plenty of coins to spend on new skins, if there will be any.
Really, how can people have problems with system like that. Maybe only if you;re a youtuber and have to make video on hot topic of OW lootboxes.

it only gets harder until some level around 20, so moot point?

It's amazing compared to what we're used to seeing in games.
Still, I dislike how random the system is. Sometimes you get basically nothing useful for many consequent crates, sometimes you get a legendary after another.
I wouldn't buy the crates because there's absolutely no guarantee I'll get my money's worth out of them.
You're getting content who cares if it's crappy, you're getting it
is a completely fucking ass argument.
Who the fuck would buy a game to have a mediocre experience with one of the core features, especially at full price?

Character visuals and player identity are a seriously important thing for many people.
If I hate how I look and are nickle and dimed to pay for cosmetics, it'll negatively effect my experience.

its not even addictions, its just how people are. just look at how bad csgo and tf2 are, all because of these lootboxes. there is a problem with them, because they are literally made to exploit people. it is the fault of the games system.
Well crap loot makes getting something good much more exciting.
There's nothing exciting about getting boxes of crap sprays and then getting 1 good skin. It's pathetic.

Is it crappy? I dunno, I got plenty of legendary skins I wanted already, stuff like taunts and victory poses. I think rate is like 1 leg per 10 boxes or something like that.
I mean they can't just put 4 legendary skins in each box, that will ruin they rarirty.

Some of them are cool, plus its not just sprays, voice lines also, and voice lines are pretty good too since you can spam them, even some player icons look pretty sick.
Maybe you want to get every single on legendary skin in game after playing for 2 weeks, but thats not how it works.

I would agree if you got a fair amount of coins for duplicate items. Getting a duplicate legendary for example doesn't give shit for coins.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I care more about how a game plays and what integral content I'm receiving than how my character looks.
Skins are a method of dick waving and really when it comes down to it, people are gonna care more about how well you play the game than how your character looks. If you care about perceptions of others in a game, show your worth via how you play.

Since there is no trading rarity means fuck all really.

you kinda are, unfortunately. and thats why lootboxes exist. if they wanted a real, level headed way of getting skins, they would simply give you coins at the end of every match, and let you buy skins with that. or let you unlock them via challenges. lootboxes arent a level headed way of cosmetics whatsoever. you gravitate toward buying them, because they barely give you jack shit, so you want to buy a lot of them at a time. if you get some good stuff, you're probably going to want to buy more. its why they stuff them full of crap, and also have duplicates. if everything was a one time unlock, that would also be a bit more reasonable. but they want their money, and lootboxes are the easiest way to do that.

If people are dumb enough to pay into this system then it's their fault.
It's definitely not a case of "people gladly play into it because they don't know any better" because there's plenty of high profile games that include arguably fairer systems to getting cosmetics.
Paying into this system then complaining about it just doesn't make sense in my eyes. If it's such a problem it should be identifiable immediately and concerns would be voiced en masse.

its not necessarily their fault when the system is literally designed around exploiting them. it isnt some kind of terrible awful problem, or a reason to avoid the game, or boycott it, but people shouldnt be praising it. its just another shitty lootbox system, thats all.
Sure it sucks that it has microtransactions but as long as you consistently play the game you don't really need to buy a loot box ever. At least it's not the Valve system where there's no way for you to ever get the contents without paying up.

Since we don't know the odds, we don't actually know if that's true or not.
You'll recall people in ME3MP that to THIS DAY still haven't gotten certain guns or characters.

Professional reviewers aside is the playerbase actually praising the loot system a significant amount? I've not seen any discussion of that sort thus far.

each way has its pros and cons. I wouldnt consider valves way any better, but as overwatch uses duplicate exchange for coins, valve lets you sell items on the market for real money, which can either be used to buy items you want, or use it for other purchases, or simply trade with people. (however, valve is leaning toward slowly getting rid of trading, it seems like, with most items in dota 2 being untradable for weeks/months after getting them.)
