So, I've been working on this project for myself, where I'm vectorizing a picture.
I haven't used the pen tool before, so I was very interested in finding out how it works. I've been using various filters to guide my ideas then going over everything with the pen tool. However, I am having troubles with her face and hair.

This is the outcome of my work so far. I haven't been able to do anything with her head and chest area (which is why that looks so terrible there) and her right leg either. I was wondering if someone could work up an extremely brief, rough sketch about how they'd think I should shade her face and maybe ideas for her hair?
Now, one very important note: I intend to print this out using multiple pieces of paper and making a stencil out of it. I understand that it'll take some time, but I'm confident It'll work. The point of bringing this is is that it has to be fairly simple. Also, I intend to only use the colors that i'm already using.
Thank you for any help at all, and feel free to criticize any part of it as long as you keep in mind that this is a first attempt :buddy:
EDIT: Big picture size, watch out. Also, I know she doesn't have a nose yet, I just haven't thought of how to draw it yet.
not bad but could use some details on the face

I just haven't decided how to detail the face yet, lol \/:v:\/
I can see that you've got a good start. Keep at it!
looks to me like you used a filter on a good portion of it and only a little bit was actually done by hand

oh i see you covered that. well, still, it looks odd, looks as though you purposefully traced artifacting.

Yes: I used some filters to give me a good guide of how it should look, then traced a negotiation between that, the actual image without any filters and how I want it to look. I haven't been able to finish this process just yet.
Could you tell me how you used filters? Was it the overall image or did you select certain areas and filter? I love this kind of art, but I'm really useless at figuring anything out / being inventive in Photoshop. Obviously, I can't give you any advice, sorry.

Oh sure, though this was very experimental in nature :)
First of all, one very important filter is cutout (Under artistic I believe). This tries to bring the amount of colors down to a specified amount, and allows you to set how precise or general it is.
Also, I used threshold changes (Image>adjustments>threshold). Also, changing contrast, levels, etc often gave me some ideas of how to trace it. I did this filters about 10 tens for each unique area around the picture.
It's coming along nice so far

Ah! Thank you very much :) I'll refer back to this when I'm back at college Monday, it'd be great to have Photoshop at home though, but Gimp suffices for now ;)
If that's you in the image, I just fell in love.

:D That's not me lol. However, that is Ellen Page.
(I'm a guy)
Okay, so I've been working on small fixes to things and trying out a multitude of different ideas for the left leg. I still haven't gotten to the head area, however.
Progress so far:

Does anyone thing the new left leg is total crap, or decent? I'm trying to see if it's worth the effort to change it all.
*Shameless bump* :(

Making it cleaner and better. Also, as an added bonus, you get this random 'shop I made explaining Mole conversions for chemistry!
