PALM COAST, Fla. -- A Flagler County school committee has canceled a high school production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" because of offensive language in the play. The theater director at Flagler Palm Coast High School, Ed Koczergo, said the problem is the N-word. Koczergo said the word can't be removed from the script because of copyright laws. Principal Jacob Oliva said parents, students and community members began complaining about it during the third week of rehearsals. The production was scheduled to open Nov. 12. Most Flagler County ninth-graders read the novel dealing with racism in a fictional Depression-era Alabama town as part of their course work. Oliva said the guidance teachers give in the classroom about controversial material isn't available to community members coming to the play.
http://www.news4jax.com/news/25643345/detail.html One of the greatest American works about the immorality of racism, banned because of a racist word. :irony:
That is just wrong...
But, The bird is the word right? I mean, everybody knows that the bird is the word.
this is why censorship is bad people are fucking cry babies "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a very important piece of literature
Only in America.... So the people rating me dumb or disagree care to answer as to where else in the world they would ban an anti racism book because of a racist word? Or do you intend on continuing being stupid?

i love this book
Stupid flagler county...
If it's not used as a racist term, yelling nigger out loud is perfectly fine. Especially in this very important piece of literature.
If it's not used as a racist term, yelling nigger out loud is perfectly fine. Especially in this very important piece of literature.
You said the N word in a post, now I am offended. :downs:
Why can't they just not say it.
You said the N word in a post, now I am offended. :downs:
Only if I cut nigger from my posts, everyone's sheltered minds will be safe.
Next we're going to try erasing slavery and all of its evidence from history books because someone found it offensive. Great historic literature banned over one word, that's ridiculous.
If it's not used as a racist term, yelling nigger out loud is perfectly fine. Especially in this very important piece of literature.
The context in the book/film is offensive, but there should be no reason why others should take it personally.
The book very good. If someone gets offended by it, than they're probably stupid or something.
Only if I cut nigger from my posts, everyone's sheltered minds will be safe.
:c00lbert: Yeah man good plan
wouldn't the point of the book be to teach how racism is bad god damn

Then just have the kid accidentally skip over it I seriously doubt that the company that owns the play is going to be watching it and sue them.
Why can't the actors just "forget" to say it if everyone is going to get so offended?
wouldn't the point of the book be to teach how racism is bad god damn
no, you're not thinking right stop with your logical sense
We're reading this book in my English class. I like it, but I just kinda shake my head in disapproval when I see the n-word. I know it was common back then, but imagine if a majority (Keyword is majority, for all you guys who were ready to prove me wrong) of the American population still used it offensively, that would be just terrible.
Principal Jacob Oliva said parents, students and community members began complaining about it during the third week of rehearsals.
Students and community members complaining? I bet they're making that bit up. It's just a few brainwashed parents who spend 3 hours at church every sunday.

You can look back at how far society's come since then. Those are the kind of thoughts they should inspire in my opinion.
That book is fucking boring.
That's like banning Of Mice and Men because it has the "N word" and has a disabled guy killed at the end. We must keep everyone's minds pure by removing all traces of bad things.
way to completely miss the point of the entire story, dipshits
Nigger. Nigger this. Nigger that. Nigger everything. Most of the time when the word "Nigger" is used, it's not racist. TJ(black): what's good? Timmy(black): sup, haha ya saw that nigga wreaking Rashawn? World= Not racism White kid in play: nigger World: DAT IZ RACIST!!!!!!1111!!!1
to kill a mocking bird was a shit movie it didnt even have a happy ending!
No better than saying "Lets ban Facepunch because it has a 'dumb' rating - a word used at the expense of the mute."
