• Musicians/songwriters, who influenced you?

Simple question, really. Who or what influences you in your creation of music? Was it a family member who bought you your first instrument or your favourite band? I grew up listening to 90's alternative bands like Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins, but started to get into heavier stuff in my early teens and began to learn to play guitar at the height of the nu-metal craze... Eventually, I discovered bands such as A Perfect Circle, Tool and Deftones and started to lean more towards ethereal, rootsy and melodic heavy rock stuff stuff. Nowdays, most of the music I make by myself has that "post rock" kind of vein to it. And you? :)
Nothing special.
Fatboy Slim and shit like that got me into electronic. Pendulum into DnB. Before that it was beatles and stuff I mostly listened to. For rap it was MF DOOM, Nujabes, lots of underground stuff oh and fucking Daft Punk ofc. Everyone who makes electronic is influenced by Daft Punk fosho
Pendulum and cosmic gate introduced me to electronic music. Before hearing about them, I listened to some shitty gangsta rap (ice cube, dr dre, snoop dogg) and tried to make beats like they had. Lately I've been mostly influenced by Amon Tobin, Tim Exile, Two Fingers, Noisia
My biggest influence in music is Howard Shore. After that, probably Clint Mansell and, to a lesser extent, Hans Zimmer and John Williams. I also grew up listening to a lot of Debussy and Enya and they've influenced my piano compositions and improvisations.
My mom always liked to listen to music with interesting bass, and I grew up listening to that and the 90's rock my sister listened to. That's probably the reason I play bass.
Instrument demonstrators for brands like Roland and Yamaha. Not even shitting you [editline]6th October 2011[/editline] Really though video game music plays a HUGE element in my electronic stuff
Let me take you on a short picture journey. I'd start with my dad, but you ain't getting a picture of him. First person: He was the first person who truly inspired me to go forward with my guitar playing. Next came this guy: That's when I started playing and listening to heavier music. He taught me the basis of "the riff" in a way. Then I went to guitar school and my teacher has been a major inspiration for me. He then showed me: and now my main influence is a whole band: obviously I've had more influences, but these are the main ones
Skinny Puppy, SPK, Einstürzende Neubauten, John Cage just to name a few.
I got a guitar after I first started getting into Johnny Cash, first song I ever learnt to play was Ring of Fire.
Death From Above 1979 inspired me to play drums and Camo & Krooked inspire my electronic creations
Frank Zappa.

The things that inspire me are things that I don't understand. It is the search for understanding that makes me a better musician. System of a Down - They gave me a decent understanding of riffing and how to make chaos. It's safe to safe that I understand them well enough now, but years ago I was perplexed by what they were doing. Metallica - They amazing at making hooks and their songs have solid structure. Simplicity is a big thing with them, so many of their intros are simple, yet they are so memorable. Pink Floyd - They have a very unique sound and Gilmour is a great guitarist. They changed the way I listened to music, so they of course had a big effect on the way I make music. Steve Vai - Solid guitar player who really goes all out, the music he comes up with shows it. Very unique sound which I find very interesting. They say blues phrases are like words, and the way Vai uses them, it sounds like he is speaking a different language. Dream Theater - They've gotten me into making progressive music. I've learned a lot about making longer songs from them, I can't say I've mastered that craft at all, but I'm still working on it. Thelonious Monk - The first time I listened to him I thought "he's playing all the wrong notes, but it still sounds good". I was really confused. Made me think a lot about what a musician does with their audience. BB King - Simplicity. I can play back most of what he plays, but could I come up with it? Would I come up with something so simple? Really makes you want to do more with less. Major 7 chords - Certainly not a musician, but the sound these chords create still intrigue me. Sounds kind of dumb, but I really don't get why these chords sound so good. Charles Mingus - I still don't understand a lot of the music. I understand it more than I did the first time, but it's just kind of an awing experience. If I could have someone listen to one of my songs and have the same reaction that I had after listening to The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, I would be totally satisfied. It's not that I want to go for the same music, but I just want to put the audience in an state of awe.
Every artist that I've heard that has made me feel something has inspired me.
what AKz said, but I feel there are a few standouts, particularly in regards to how I write now for punk- Dead Kennedys Minor Threat The Hives (1999-2004) Tsushimamire (and other various contemporary Japanese Riot Grrl bands) 7Seconds -Metal Evile Morbid Saint Gammacide -Acoustic Fugazi -Rock Led Zeppelin (particularly random use of Dom7 chords) Budgie (Minor third and minor seventh tastic) [editline]10th October 2011[/editline] I'd say dead kennedys is what got me started on really caring about music and wanting to play it though
I have plenty of idols who inspire me, but the ones I think have inspired me the most are you guys. Listening to what you've made, helping with criticism and just generally hanging here has spurned me to create a lot of music, obviously my band members are also a big inspiration because they are my buddies, but this subforum with such a varying level of skill and musical ability (and last but not least, the variety of genres of music) have done wonders to me and my musical ability. So really, you guys are the best and I just want you all to know that each and every one of you are amazing, awesome human beings who have made a huge difference to someone who you don't know or will possibly ever meet. Thank you all, for being who you are and for making the music that you make.
i watched a video of Skream playing a live show and thought 'thats going to be me one day' that was about a year ago and i'm still on that ableton live shit every day making it happen bro
Marty Friedman and John Petrucci are the top two positive influences on me. Not sure if Herman Li or Kirk Hammett count as positive influences, so...
to an extent, certainly
Harry-Gregson Williams and his works for the MGS series is a major influence. I also like the works of various game composers.
The flaming lips was the band that inspired me the most when me and my friends started Adventure! skip to 0:33 pure chaos basically. Now we're trying to play real songs and are mostly inspired by: Hella black flag the white stripes heres the best most recent cover we did the vocals may not be choice but you can get the basics
