Emma Morano, thought to be the world's oldest person and the last to be born in the 1800s, celebrated her 117th birthday on Tuesday, still swearing by her diet of two raw eggs a day. Morano was born in November 1899, four years before the Wright brothers first took to the air. Her life has spanned three centuries, two World Wars and over 90 Italian governments. Friends, neighbors and her doctor gathered in her small apartment in the northern town of Verbania, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, to mark the latest milestone, presenting her with a large white birthday cake.
"My life wasn't so nice," she told Reuters TV as she sat in an armchair by her window, a white shawl over her shoulders. "I worked in a factory until I was 65, then that was that." In an interview with La Stampa newspaper five years ago she said her fiance had died in World War One and that she had then been forced to marry a man she did not love.
She was 40 in WW2. Just wow.
She said she had plenty of suitors after that, but never chose another partner. “I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone,” she said.
I wish I could meet her, she seems chill.

Jesus Christ, what a tragic life. I wouldn't know if I can be as calm as her later on if this happened in my life.
She actually looks really well for being fuckin' 117.

Seriously. She only looks 70-80ish
Seriously. She only looks 70-80ish
I'm always surprised by old people who look good for their age.
These are people who had natural diets and home cooked meals throughout the course of their life, did not typically sustain themselves off fast food like we do today or rely on processed goods with preservatives and other toxic chemicals in them.
Even with modern medicine I feel like we may not be able to live as long as some of these people.
It is just amazing she has seen all these events unfold....
We have people who are just around 20-30 years of age who think the world is gonna end. I think we could learn a lot from this woman.
Seriously. She only looks 70-80ish
Nah, in the OP's picture she looks "young", but in the rest of the pictures she does look pretty ancient.

That fucked me up. Knowing my grandparents who are dead now who served at the end of the war in their late teens/early twenties.
This woman is old enough to have been born during the reign of Queen Victoria
Seriously. She only looks 70-80ish
My maternal grand mother is only in her 70's and looks absolutely ancient. Like, skeletal. She's about 5'10 and only 70 lbs. Not to mention she's been a 2packaday smoker since she was eight.

She looks just slightly older than my 90 year old gran. Wow.

Do you not realise everyone from this period had home cooked meals and "natural" (lol) diets?
[editline]1st December 2016[/editline]
If that was the secret to long life most people from her era would still be kicking.
But they're not.

A lot of it is probably just due to genetic factors IMO.
Hope I dont live long

Get your shit together, Italy.
She won the genetic lottery, more like it.

If you're referring to Morano and her generation, which is the age group I was referring to specifically, then yes.
What, did you think I was talking about your fifty something uncle or aunt who gets fast food every other day?

Obviously, but the saying you are what you eat applies here. You eat shit your body becomes shit. My grandfather is still kicking at 87 after starting a diet at a young age that eliminated a majority of meats and other foods not good for him and his brother died in his early 60s. By all means my grandfather should've croaked decades ago but he started early and saved his life.

From the outhouse to outer space.

Often not the case. The sorts of additives they were using 60 years ago were often absolutely horrendous, as were the medical practices of the day. Its no accident that the life expectancy in the west is higher than it has ever been and is still rising. The 'good old days' don't exist.

I was under the impression that food was pretty fucked in most of the early 1900s being vastly unregulated and all.

Im getting to the age where the world I grew up in no longer exists and everything seems alien and bizarre to me. I am not sure how she could handle being that old and being from a more distant era.
She was 15 when World War 1 first broke out...
When I was 15 I was goofing around in Garry's Mod...
