Nintendo is promoting Mario Party: Star Rush by pointing out a new survey conducted by Wakefield Research that many parents say they don’t have enough time to spend with their kids. As the big N notes, “parents tell their children they are too busy to play with them an average of eight times a week, with almost half of parents (48 percent) saying they spend more time commuting to work than playing with their kids. But simple things like playing a quick video game as a family, which tops the list of activities that kids enjoy most (33 percent), can be easy and fun.”
How to market a game 101
might be a good thing depending on who you ask
personally playing video games with my parents was the worst thing i've ever tried to do
Maybe they could instead market it better by making the games not a fucking horrible nightmare.
How did the image get so pixelated already?
It make more sense to do something like this with a console version of Mario party.
Handheld party games just sound weird.

It should be an SVG ffs.
I mean, at least it isn't a mainline title, where they ruined it by making a mini-game only happening once in a decade and everyone moves at once.
Holy fuck how do you ruin Mario Party so badly

It really depends with my parents. My dad played Atari and arcades as a kid but never really did much after that, he would occasionally play Mario Kart but my brother and I could easily skunk him. My mom really doesn't have video game aptitiude.
But stuff like Wii Sports or Rabbids Party they were all over, depending on how easy it is to just pick up and play we could all do. If this is based on some sort of gauntlet of minigames I could see it being effective.
Too bad Mario Party is a homewrecker and destroyer of relationships.
Never played Mario party, when finished is the casualty count as high as with monopoly?
About the same, if not more
I remember playing Mario Party 2 with my family and I always won with Luigi.
Ive never seen a series stray further from what made it enjoyable
I mean, that implies that it was ever good. Everyone knows that Mario Party has always been bad and we only play it to see eachother suffer.

Mario Party 4 is fun as shit, what are you on about?
Those are some depressing statistics. Probably something we need to be working on in general.
Mario Party is one of my favorite games for playing with family/friends.
The only thing I don't like is that in recent ones, everyone moves when someone rolls the dice. Though I still enjoy it.
god MP10 was such a letdown, paid full price for sake of a get together that wanted to chill and do that sort of thing but save for a couple minigames, the way it handled everything was absolute garbage compared to what it used to be
"Quick game" of Mario party is like a "quick game" of monopoly
given the new game is called 'Star Rush' I wonder if it has much faster paced gamemodes
"Quick game" of Mario party is like a "quick game" of monopoly
Monopoly isn't actually so bad, it is just that no-one ever plays Monopoly as the rulebook says, with a load of house rules always being added as a result, breaking it entirely.
The worst house rule that drags games on is properties not being auctioned. In the official rules, if you land on a property, you can either buy it, or pass. If you pass, the banker must auction the property and anyone can bid. This leads to money being taken out of the game much more rapidly, speeding it up, and making it more engaging.
The second worst house rule that is near ubiquitous is when people store taxes e.t.c on free parking, that literally keeps money in the game for much longer, which leads to it dragging on.
The third most annoying house rule often added is "you must do a lap of the board before you can buy anything." This drags the game on by a few more rounds, adds 200 more to every player, and is just frustrating.
Another one is adding more houses or hotels, which messes with game balance. The only thing you can add is the bank never runs out of money to issue, in which case you just write paper IOUs that are worth the money.
There are also supplementary official rules for a shorter game.
The first 3 house rules are so common, and all are near gamebreaking.

i hope this is sarcasm m8
the first few mario party games had their flaws but were excellent shit
it's once you hit the gamecube that things began the slow decline into mediocrity and wasting your time per turn or even in the minigames themselves
There was a time when my dad and i would play smash bros daily, that was almost 14 years ago.
I'm unfortunately an immense purist when it comes to Mario Party. I really liked the simple, easy to explain and pick up concepts of collect coins, buy stars, etc. Mario Party 10 was simple as fuck to explain, since they simplified everything down, and I wasn't that big of a fan of it. Mario Party up until 5 was just complex enough to be satisfying and fun. Once they just flat out got rid of the 20 coins to a Star formula, I became way less interested. If I want to plan a day of Mario Party, I'm sooner emulating the older games that putting in my Mario Party 10 disc.

Bit off topic but Star Rush is actually pretty good. You should try it before you comment about stuff you've never touched.
I think this is a really interesting graphic, and I like the intent. I agree that kids could use a game that's family interaction oriented and quick pacing helps make sure that there is enough time to do that. Even if the game isn't like a critically good game, I can see it being a hit for the intended social audience. I applaud Nintendo for going after a market segment like this and focusing on building local relationships
I think in the year 2016
Mario Party 1 = 2/10 game.
Mario Party 2 = 6-7/10
Mario Party 3 = 9/10
Mario Party 4 = 7/10
Mario Party 5 = 8/10
Mario Party 6 = 1/10
Mario Party 7 = I literally don't remember a thing about this one. I think I only played it for like 2 maps
Mario Party 8 = 8/10, maps owned and made up for some of the more dull minigames.
Mario Party 9 = N/A, Skipped. Had no interest in the car thing.
Mario Party 10 = 4/10 Gave it a shot despite the car and I think the minigames are fantastic but fuck the car and insanely small number of maps. Everything is just kinda phoned in.
Just in case you're wondering about my MP tastes.
Never played Mario party, when finished is the casualty count as high as with monopoly?
It frequently is. There's spots you can land on where you can lose coins or stars to other players. (Coins buy stars, stars dictate who wins with coins being used to break ties.) Most notably the result that switches the stars of two players is exceptionally frustrating. I can't tell you how many times I've been less than five turns from the end of a board in first place with 3+ stars only to have the asshat in last place, with 0 stars, land on a switch stars spot taking me straight from first place to last place with basically no chance whatsoever of recovery.
Never played Mario party, when finished is the casualty count as high as with monopoly?
Mario Party is best played with friends who can roll with absolutely stupid shit happening to them. Some games are worse about it then others but you can really fuck with each other in these games to the point you'll be red in the face.
Then Mario Party asks you to do a minigame where you punch each other in the head for coins and it kinda melts away.
It's not the great friendship destroyer people claim though, that's Dokapon Kingdom.

They're probably aiming this ad towards younger parents
how can you have a party game on a handheld?
Everyone knows Sonic Shuffle was the superior party game
How can Mario Party 1 be a 2/10 game, when it is the seed, the foundation, the game that started it all?
Because the later ones could further develop the seed into a plant of beauty? You can't just give it a high rating PURELY for starting the series.

Pretty much this, it's why I said 2016 and all. If you have a option to choose a game to go to there's literally no real reason to go back to 1 because 2 has almost all of the good games from 1 built into it and the maps are far more refined with the introduction of items and the subtraction of the palm splitting rotation minigames.
how can you have a party game on a handheld?
For Star Rush you can play the entire game with just one copy. Other dudes download a Party Guest App and join the hosts game. You're not locked out of any modes or anything either, it's pretty neat if you and some pals all have free time and own 3DS's.
