This is the place to post anything and everything making, designing, fixing, buying or selling. This thread is a consolidation place for of most of the former Makers Mates section. Post your projects, post build logs, no matter how grand or small the project is post it! There is serious money to be made or saved thrift shopping. I've always been one to frequent second hand shops looking for the few things that originally got me hunting, like Luxo lamps and modern furniture, but now I've figured out how and what to buy to make serious money from just junk shopping in my spare time. The OP will contiue to be updated with material. Here is something I'm working on right now, tomorrow I am starting back in the studio for my final semester and I'm really wanting to have a go at finally making a physical version of a speaker design I did a few years ago but never got around to making until now. [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/Portfolio/mini_monitors.png[/t] The proportions of the model are off, but I think it would look interesting. I might make the base solid, in that same shape, to help with stability but I'm not too particularly concerned because often speakers are perched on pedestals, but I of course will see when it's actually built. I think I'll make a quick mockup in cheap plywood to test stability and see how it goes. The design is inspired by a table I designed and made earlier, [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/Portfolio/table_zpsda6979d7.png[/t]

Isn't this going to be floppy as hell?
Isn't this going to be floppy as hell?
That's an old render, I just did a quick photoshop mock up of it more along the lines of what it will look like, still not scaled right. [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/gate_zpsea18cc4b.jpg[/t] It will be more slender than the original render. In this one the base will be more substantial but also the bolts for the base will ramp up towards the back, changing the point at which each piece bends, and changing the curve, combining that with the curve of the upper speaker cabinet as it narrows front to back, it creates a set of curves in the wood that all work against each other in bending. I am also going to make the wood pieces out of two thin 1/8th strips, with glue applied and clamped into a jig to set the curve, and once the glue cures they will have zero flex individually.
I just used Evaporust solution for the first time last night in an attempt to clean off some old rusted tools, like an old pair of Channel Locks and it worked like magic overnight. Cleaned them up perfectly, only a light brass brush was needed to scrub off the residue. I really recommend the stuff, it'll be great for tool restoration. Next time I'll try electrolysis.
