Welcome, Facepunch musicians, to the second edition of the Facepunch Covers album! Killerteacup, who had previously hosted the first covers album thread, had suggested another one be made and since no one has taken up on it yet, I figured I'd do it :) I think Facepunch is due for another round of interesting covers. Basically, any of you FPers who are interested in participating can choose any song by any artist to cover in any which way you like, whether that is putting your own unique spin on it or just doing a spot on faithful tribute to the original. Covering a song is a great way to learn about how its artist wrote the piece, as well as producing and performing it. This thread will be in the same vein as the Collab albums and the previous covers album, and as such, will follow similar rules: Important Information: Anyone can enter! Anyone at all - if there are problems with the encoding or quality, it may not be accepted, but that will be up to discussion in the thread, when you submit. You must submit a short review for every song once the album is released! This is to ensure everyone gets feedback on their cover, because it kinda sucks to put effort into making something and not receive any feedback. Keep the song at least recognizable! Noone wants to hear a dubstep remix using one line of the song as a basis for a whole other song - if that's the case you might as well release it as your own. No medleys (sorry Hakita!) or mashups! Choose only one song to focus and work on. Parody lyrics are ok. Don't submit music that you aren't proud of! Self-explanatory. If you don't like it, chances are we won't either. Only one entry per person! If you have time to enter two tracks, you'd have time to improve on your first one. Furthermore, having a large amount of tracks on the album comparable to other artists is unfair to the other artist's submitting to the work. Collaborations are ok! Collaborating with others does not restrict you from having your own entry. No genre restrictions! Same as the collab album, but as an additional note - this includes the genre of the original track and the genre of your cover. I think the most interesting covers are those where the cover is a different genre to that of the original, and that's something that you may want to consider giving a try when submitting - it's more interesting and more fun. You must call dibs on a song! In order to lay claim to a song, you must state which song you'd like to cover in a post. This is to prevent multiple covers of the same song. I'll update the OP with a list right below with who is covering what song. It's ok to change your mind, so you aren't locked into covering a song if you've already staked your claim on it. Just let me know. Don't cover songs from the previous album! Since this is a new covers thread, we wouldn't want to hear songs that have been covered already. So here is a list of songs that are forbidden:
The Beat Goes On - Sonny and Cher Storm The Embassy - Stray Cats War? - System of a Down One Must Fall 2097 - Kenny Chou Green is the Colour - Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd Avast Your Ass - Kitsune2 Always & Never - Coheed & Cambria Friday I'm in Love - The Cure Hit Me Baby One More Time - Britney Spears Nocturne - Debussy Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & the Waves In the Pines - Leadbelly In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins Funeral For A Friend - Elton John Time - Pink Floyd The Dread And The Fugitive Mind - Megadeth A Drug Against War - KMFDM One - Metallica Tarkus - Emerson, Lake & Palmer Cygnus X-1 - Rush One Last Time - Dream Theater Duel With The Devil - Transatlantic
And if you wanted to take a listen to the first covers album: http://fpcovers.bandcamp.com/album/facepunch-covers No previous recordings! This rule works on the honor system. It's encouraged that you choose a song to work on specifically for this album, and not submit anything you had recorded prior to the creation of this thread. I'll make exceptions for people who really want to submit something but have time restraints, unexpected problems, etc. Deadline! I'm setting a tentative deadline for whenever we get enough tracks. Since it is tentative, it's subject to change of course. Submissions: Submit in .WAV If it's not WAV I'm not taking it, sorry. And as an important note, export it to WAV - don't convert it from another format to WAV. Don't give me a FLAC just because it's lossless. Normalizing: The tracks must be normalized to -3db to ensure all the songs on the album have the same levels. Labelling: Filename must have your name and song title in it. Submitting: So long as the link works I don't mind where you upload it. Soundcloud usually works best since you can also post WIPs for feedback here. Once you've uploaded it, test the link to make sure it works. Then, send it to me in a Facepunch PM with the following template:
Song title: Your artist name: The original artist's name: Description: Why you chose to cover the song: Music Page: Song Link:
Example:
Song title: On Melancholy Hill Your artist name: killerteacup The original artist's name: Gorillaz Description: Acoustic cover of Gorillaz single 'On Melancholy Hill' released on Plastic Beach, featuring myself on acoustic guitar and harmonica or whatever, someone else on vocals, etc. Why you chose to cover the song: Sounds good or maybe I've had a deep emotional connection to it, or its significant to my musical style or makes me feel good. Music Page: www.soundcloud.com/example Song Link: www.sendspace.com/example
Once done, I'll pm you if there's any problems, and pm you if there's not any problems saying it's all good. Then you can sit back and wait for release while helping other people finish their own covers. Need any help? If you need anyone to play for you or assist you in any way, you need only ask. I'll add a list right below for people who are willing to lend their talents to others and people who need assistance. Available musicians: Mr._N - Can provide vocals, guitar, bass In need: Additional Information: Feel free (in fact, feel obliged) to post this elsewhere once it's done. I have no doubt that there will be some quality material if this gets off the ground. It would be nice to get this to reach a larger audience than Facepunch, so refer and refer! If you can, get it on a blog. If not, post it all over the net. Album Art: I'll let this be handled within the discussion of the thread once (if) it gets going, since that's how it usually goes. Alright, now that we have all the important stuff covered (pun intended), it's time to make some music! Entries So Far:
Song title: Old pines Your artist name: Valon S The original artist's name: Ben Howard Description: Acoustic cover of Ben Howards Old pines, featuring myself on guitar and vocal. are we going to do the same contributors make reviews rule?
Rule was added.
Looking good! I'll PM you the details on login for the collab albums :) Count me in by the way, I'd love to give this a try! I'm thinking of maybe entering this track: It is a punk cover of the intro theme to the show Adventure Time. :)
Damn! I wish I had a microphone - and could sing! Maybe I'll do some kind of glitchy jazz thing. In the mean time, I will gladly make artwork for this.
You don't have to have a microphone/sing to be able to cover a song. A vocal melody could easily be covered with an instrument of some sort.
I see no mash ups, but what if the piece I'm doing is like, a bunch of variations on the same theme. Because Komm Susser Todd from Neon Genesis Evangelion is basically a variation of Pacabel's Canon, and I wanted to do something with a bit of both and a little more. Is that okay, seeing as everything is basically Canon but with twists and variations?
That's alright, since the song you're interested in already incorporates it. We just don't want anything that's just so blatantly "mashed" together like this:
What would happen if I ended up making a track, but it turns out someone made another one? Would neither be accepted?
Any rules about collaborations? E.g. If I was to try and get someone from the facepunch singers/vocalist thread to do a track with me (more an example than an actual plan on my end) Would that also restrict them from doing there own cover, because they were featured on mine?
What would happen if I ended up making a track, but it turns out someone made another one? Would neither be accepted?
Ok, we will have it so that in order to lay claim to a song, you must make a post calling dibs on it. I'll update the op with a list of who's doing what whenever someone calls dibs on a song.
i'll probably do either King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic parts 1 and 2 or ELP's Toccata

On the first covers album, I collaborated with Pepin for his cover, but I made my own as well.
OP updated with rules for collaborating and claiming a song.
Attempting "I could be the one" by Avicii. Is it okay if I use the acapella ontop?
Since you're covering a majority of the track, I'd say it's fine.
So, how is it progressing for people? :)
kinda forgot this even existed, haven't even started
It dropped off the radar. I should have something in the next couple weeks though - just waiting on my singer to come round and record for me :)
shit, I'd completely forgotten about this, I'd better pick a song and start working on it
I started on the first few bars of my project, but been busy with other things. Considering changing the deadline to "whenever we have a sufficient amount of tracks."
i'm thinking about doing a metal version of some 70's progrock song with vocaloids for the vocals, might be too much work since i have a lot of stuff to do now, though
Considering submitting a cover of "Men With Beards" by Kunt And The Gang for this...
I'd like to try and enter this one but I guess I'll see if I can get anything good going.
Thanks to fuckusername for the first entry!
