BAGHDAD (AP) -- Reinvigorated by American airstrikes, Kurdish forces retook two towns from Sunni militants Sunday, achieving one of their first victories after weeks of retreating, a senior Kurdish military official said. Kurdish peshmerga fighters were able to push the militants of the Islamic State group out of the villages of Makhmour and al-Gweir, some 45 kilometers from Irbil, Brig. Gen. Shirko Fatih said. The United States launched a fourth round of airstrikes Sunday against militant vehicles and mortars firing on Irbil as part of efforts to blunt the militants' advance and protect American personnel near the Kurdish capital. U.S. warplanes and drones have also attacked militants firing on minority Yazidis around Sinjar, which is in the far west of the country near the Syrian border. In the Kurdish capital on Sunday, the president of the semi-autonomous Kurdish Regional Government, Massoud Barzani, said American military support has been effective thus far, but, he added, peshmerga soldiers require more firepower to defeat the militants. "We are not asking our friends to send their sons to fight on our behalf," Barzani told The Associated Press in a brief interview. "What we are asking our friends is to provide us support and to cooperate with us in providing us with heavy weapons that we are able to fight this terrorist group."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/10/islamic-state_n_5666195.html Hopefully this is a tipping point. I think this is footage of some of the fighting: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=0c0_1407686376
Give 'em hell, Kurds.
Give these men more weapons and ammunition, please.
Finally someone to kick these fuckers.
Send em back to hell.
Not surprised, the Kurds are a tough bunch of bastards. Give 'm enough ammo and guns and they'll kick ISIS' arse.
hopefully, if the peshmerga hold out against ISIS, they can look toward the possibility of an independent kurdish state.
So, Isis is being attacked by the US and the Kurds and soon Iran might as well join in. I'd say ISIS might be fucked soon.
Gotta ask now when there's thread with Kurds as main topic, what is FP's general consensus about them? Are they good guys or? From what I've gathered, FP seems to like them since they really kick ISIS' balls.
Finally someone to kick these fuckers.
that's worked well in the past
What I'd fear with giving them munitions is that those guns might be turning towards my country after ISIS is done with. Just pointing out a point, I'm not against supporting them.
Well, back in June a spokesman for the ruling party of Turkey said they would be ready to accept an Kurdish state:
"In the past an independent Kurdish state was a reason for war [for Turkey] but no one has the right to say this now," Huseyin Celik, a spokesman for the ruling AK party, told the Financial Times. "In Turkey, even the word 'Kurdistan' makes people nervous, but their name is Kurdistan," he added. "If Iraq is divided and it is inevitable, they are our brothers . . . Unfortunately, the situation in Iraq is not good and it looks like it is going to be divided."
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/turkey-ready-accept-kurdish-state-northern-iraq-1454556

They have malls and trendy clothing shops and auto shows and things you probably wouldn't associate with Iraq. I don't know much about the PKK but the article I linked says hostilities have ceased. And articles from 2013 speak of a withdraw from Turkey. If a peaceful agreement could be met, would the PKK be a problem at all?
