• Policeman killed in car bomb attack - Omagh, Northern Ireland

Heard some talk about a bomb in Omagh earlier over dinner, usually the bombs are duds or just threats. It happened in the town I finished school at last year, I also go out with my mates in the town. [release] Deadly terrorism returned to the scene of the worst atrocity of the Northern Ireland Troubles when a booby-trap car bomb exploded in Omagh. One police officer was confirmed killed in the blast underneath a car in Highfield Close in the Co Tyrone town. The officer, a local Catholic named as Ronan Kerr, had been preparing to drive to work in the local Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) station. The bomb exploded shortly before 4pm, close to a Gaelic sports club in a new housing development off the Gortin Road, near the town centre. Suspicion for this latest bomb attack will now fall on one of three republican dissident terror groups that have resumed their violent campaigns in the north of Ireland over recent weeks. The attack in Omagh will conjure up memories of August 1998 when a Real IRA car bomb exploded in the centre of the market town. Twenty-nine men, women and children died in the bombing, as well two unborn children. It was the single biggest loss of life during 35 years of conflict. I may have work tonight at a nightclub very close to where it happened, police currently blocking the entrance. People living in the past cause more grief than they know, read on Twitter the policeman had only finished training 3 weeks ago.
Back in '95 or '96 my family took in an Irish boy for a little over a year because of the rising tensions in Ireland. I hope this doesn't escalate into anything more serious.
Why does one of the most beautiful countries on earth have to be so fucked up? I'd be afraid to set foot in Ireland.

Omagh god! :ohdear:
Maybe it's just because everytime Ireland is in the news someone's getting a carbomb to the face.
That's not true, we're also in the news for eating up all the EU's money too. Ireland is mostly safe, whatever side of the border you're on, it's just that you have a slightly higher injury and/or explosion risk the farther north you go.
It just doesn't make sense to me why this kind of stuff is happening in the modern, western world. Yes I know what it's all about, it just doesn't make sense to be happening in the western world. Especially Europe.
A shop blew up near my college the other month in NI and a guy got stabbed to death too right beside the police station. My college is right beside the police station. Londonderry by the way.

Infact in 2006 there were 498 noted terrorist attacks* within the EU. *Interpol terrorism report
I just hope nothing happens when the Queen visits Dublin. [editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]
It's not. Trust me, I live there. Ah shit i'm going up north to Belfast tomorrow. :ohdear:
Ah shit i'm going up north to Belfast tomorrow. :ohdear:
You'll be fine. I go up all the time. Just don't piss people off. :P
RoI ftw, it's safer down here
Is Dublin safe? I'm going there for a bit.
Is Dublin safe? I'm going there for a bit.
Provided you're not heading down any backstreets at night when you're in Town (the city centre that is) you should be fine.
Is Dublin safe? I'm going there for a bit.
Generally it's fine. But there are a few areas you want to be careful in, you'll now when you see basically. It's like any other city/town etc.
Sadly, this sort of thing never really stopped once The Troubles ended. Doesn't look to be ending anytime soon either.
Is Dublin safe? I'm going there for a bit.
i've been to dublin at night time it's a shithole if you're in the wrong place there'll be drunken lads everywhere

I live in Dublin. Safe enough , only threat is drunk shitto that might come to you to ask time and vomit all over you at night. other than that it's ok. Except the part of Dublin called " Dublin 8" in which I have school unfortunately. That area is a bit scary. Don't see any bombings in Dublin over past 4 years.
I just hope nothing happens when the Queen visits Dublin. [editline]2nd April 2011[/editline] I like the NI accent. I prefer it over my RoI accent.
And I much prefer the RoI accent. In fact I giggle uncontrollably when i hear it. :keke:
Fucking terrorist scum.
earlier today I saw an article on Fox News that was a near exact copy and paste of the BBC news article. But with more emphasis on the more sensational points. They quickly changing it though. You sly fox.
ITT: Everyone thinks that Republic of Ireland = Northern Ireland
ITT: Everyone thinks that Republic of Ireland = Northern Ireland
I am pretty sure half the people who posted in this thread are Irish.
ITT: Everyone thinks that Republic of Ireland = Northern Ireland
Weren't you the one that thought England = United kingdom?
wow seriously get ahold of yourselves
I'm just casually asking about Dublin; don't group me in with pussies that haven't grown a pair yet.
Dublin will be safe, so don't worry. You pansy.
The South of Ireland is much nicer, my friend from the Netherlands was visiting during summer and he didn't like the North as much as the South, GUINNESS FACTORY IN DUBLIN DO IT. He joked with the locals saying how awesome the "liberated irish are", which they liked him for. Before he was planning the trip he thought the IRA were a proper modern military unit before I set him right on it, if he went around saying that he would have been in trouble. If you are visiting Ireland, just be careful with where you are and what you say, stay in a big crowd if your visiting and you should be fine. A lot of people will get drunk and then pick fights, watch out for that. What is annoying me is how people I know are reacting who live in Omagh. Its a tragic thing and they have the right to be angry, but wishing revenge and saying things like the death sentence would be too light? Viscous circle. I hate this country and its people.
