Microsoft Surface Will Be WiFi Only And Start At $599
New details are starting to leak out about the specs and pricing on Microsoft's new tablet, and so far it doesn't sound too good.
Bloomberg reports hearing from two sources that the Microsoft Surface tablets will be Wi-Fi only at first, which may be an effort by the company to keep costs down.
Meanwhile, TheNextWeb hears from another source that Microsoft will price the lower-end Windows RT tablet at $599.
In effect then, Microsoft would be releasing a tablet without a 3G or 4G connection, which would place it more in line with cheaper tablets like the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet, but it will be pricing that device at nearly the same cost as Apple charges for a 16 GB iPad with 4G LTE connectivity ($629). That's not exactly a recipe for success.
Throw in the fact that one new estimate shows the battery life on the two tablets will fall short of the competition, and Microsoft's new tablets start to seem like a much tougher sell.
FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS?

You could buy a relatively-good PC with that kind of money, so why the fuck would you spend it on a tablet?

Because portability?
Are you kidding me? I could buy a better laptop with that money for the same fucking price.
A 600 dollar tablet that is wi-fi only?
Well, it sort of worked for Apple.

Same reason people spent the same amount on a Ipad... So they can run around and look special holding it out in public.

even worse, this is apparently the price of the lower-end version. so you're getting a portable albeit pretty shitty computer for the same price as a good computer.
this is ridiculously overpriced.
'Priced competitively' my ass.
Last I checked Microsoft didn't take marketing tips from Apple.
The fuck is going on here?
Welp there goes the competition. Just like the ps3, no one will buy it until the price drops.
Well it isnt even being released for another 3 or so months due to windows 8 not even being out yet so there is a possibility of some backtracking.
Until someone from microsoft says what the price will be I am not going to listen that much.
Please don't come in here and say "i'm going to buy a laptop or a desktop with my $600 instead" because that's a completely different thing
I doubt it that the pricing is true, though there are better and faster tablets that are cheaper.
I probably wouldn't ever buy this.
I love how Microsoft manages to fuck everything they make.
If you're stupid enough to spend 600 bucks on a tablet, you'll most likely want to spend it on an iPad with thousands of apps and which is known to be working fine. Someone need to tell them the less expensive the Surface, the more people will want to buy it. Making either more or at the least the same amount of profit by enlarging the userbase.

I'm going to buy a 3DO with my money.
Price doesn't surprise me at all. Microsoft charges OEMs almost $100 just to use Windows on the tablet, so I'm not surprised that their own tablet is going to be that expensive.
This thing has an i5, it's actually quite fair, comparing to the iPad.

Not really. They're designing it as an ultra-portable laptop with a touch screen.
This is fucking insane.
same cost as an ipad
It will attract buyers.

It started working a whole lot better when they stuck 4G into it.
This is going to crash and burn spectacularly.
Well, I don't really see any point in buying it now...

Apparently they are saying this is for the ARM processor but it is just a rumor and he said she said and nothing is official right now.
Expect prices later on in like September.
To be honest, that price isn't that bad (I've seen Windows 7 tablets that are WAY more expensive), I just wonder what "lower-end" is.
Brings back memories:

Anyhow, this isn't too bad. And even then, we can't be sure this is the actual price.
Edit: And I didn't even notice the reference in the OP.
The price would have been reasonable if what they had announced had been the Courier, but come on.
600 bucks? I could buy a Model-T Ford back in the day for that price...

$600 now isn't the same as $600 then though. $600 back then is about the equivalent of $14,000 now.
I'd rather buy a laptop/netbook with touchscreen for that

Well, are there laptops out there with touchscreens and a price of 599$? I'd like one.

14,000 dollars for a tablet computer? What the hell man!
