U.S. Government Shutdown Threat: Budget Deal Remains Unreached
147 replies, posted
WASHINGTON--Washington is hurtling toward a government shutdown on Friday night as the time to agree on a budget for the remainder of the fiscal year grows very short.
Because of Senate rules, Democrats could be forced to break two GOP filibusters in order to pass a spending bill, and each vote requires a 30-hour delay. Government funding expires on Friday night, meaning that if negotiators don't reach a deal by the end of today or early tomorrow, just one Republican senator could stall the vote until the deadline arrives.
If the talks Tuesday between House Republicans and the White House are any guide, the two parties are a long way from a deal. House Republicans emerged from the White House telling reporters that they are committed to finding a solution to the impasse, but were unwilling to do it unless the White House and Senate Democrats agree to cuts beyond the $33 billion level that had previously been floated.
"The Speaker told the president that the House will not be put in a box and forced to choose between two options that are bad for the country (accepting a bad deal that fails to make real spending cuts, or accepting a government shutdown due to Senate inaction)," a summary of the meeting provided to reporters by House Republican leadership read.
The House has instead proposed a one-week spending bill that would cut government spending by $12 billion while funding the military through the end of September, when the fiscal year ends.
House Democrats quickly rejected the offer. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters it was time to put an end to the "sporadic, episodic" stop-gap bills and reach a final agreement. He said that Democrats would whip opposition to the House bill if it is brought to the floor.
House Republicans aren't willing to take yes for an answer, Hoyer said, and were demanding far more than they were entitled by their partial control of the government, noting that Democrats control the Senate and White House. "You would think if you're going to reach a compromise, we get two, they get one," he said. " It appears that one side doesn't want to compromise."
First news thread!
What is a "government shutdown"?
What is a "government shutdown"?
Certain government services close down until a budget can be reached.
What is a "government shutdown"?
many agencies and parts of the government(federal jobs) shut down to save money
for example, temporary removal of the IRS
How about... lowering military budget...!
"GREAT IDEA HOLE!"
I don't see this ending well at all.
What is a "government shutdown"?
Although not to sure myself, this (sort of) details what happened during the last shutdown.
I've been studying this for awhile. The Government is gonna cut pretty much all federal services and jobs besides Policing, Firefighting, Hospital Services, Air Trafficking, Utilities, and Correctional Facilities. I don't know what all they're gonna cut though.
One of my friends will lose his job if they don't make a budget agreement.
A lot of teenagers are freaking out about this for some odd reason.
It really only affects federal and government employees and institutions, afaik. Schools won't be closed down or anything and retail jobs will be fine. The kids freaking out all over Twitter and Facebook are getting ridiculous.
Although I've only read a little on this, so I'm not sure on all the details.
Hmm, i dont like the idea of not getting paid.. (military guy here)
I don't think you need to worry about that.
And here I was already to post:

No but really, unless you guys work for the government or military, there's not much to worry about. Although if you do work either of those, I believe they'll be determining who is essential and who isn't essential. Non-essential employees will be asked to not come into work because they won't be paid. Some federal employees may be paid once the whole thing is over (if it occurs that is) but there's nothing really clear yet I don't think.
I'm just going off the few articles I just read on this though so you might want to do a little more research yourself if you're worried.

The only reason I'm reading up on it is because my dad works for the government so our income may be unclear right now.
Actually our higher ups have pretty much told us we wouldn't get paid. We'll probably get back pay, but if there isn't a budget, then there's no allocated money for personel.
Pretty sure the Armed Forces are one of the things considered essential and still get money.

Maybe I'm wrong on that.

Teenagers freak out about everything.

get used to it
Usually when Federal organizations face shutdown that'll usually hit and fall on everything else on top of it.
I really just can't understand how our federal deficit has gone on for so long without having been taken care of. Obviously I don't understand all the inner workings of what needs to be done, but can it really be that hard to make a few budget cuts so that our income is greater than our spending?

Because nobody can ever come to an agreement on anything.

A handful of my friends have been told they won't be getting paid either. Three of them are currently deployed overseas.
Y'know if they brang their defense budget down to the level of the rest of the planet they'd STILL be the most well defended country, but with several hundred billion more dollars a year to spend.
But no, they need that money to potentially possibly design a jet that may or may not ever be put into production with an agreement that could possibly maybe be reached.
So lets take it from hospitals.

Well why the hell not? Politicians are stupid and don't seem to really represent the wishes of the people.

Welp, that's politics for ya.

Maybe their parents are federal government workers?
What about DoDEA schools?

When asked about military family programs and support services for wounded combat vets, Morrell said the Pentagon is still determining core services that must continue, but that he could not yet provide details on specific ones.
Nothing is for certain at this point, so I'm not sure.
Maybe their parents are federal government workers?
I doubt it. Half the people posting about it don't seem to have any idea what a government shut down means.

But even though you won't get fired directly, won't the social level and such drop, mainly if this goes for some time?
I'm not sure.
Like I said, I'm not clear on a lot of the details. I'm just repeating what I've read.

I see.
Wiki says police, fire fighting, armed forces, utilities, air traffic management and corrections are usually the 'essential services' in the event of a shutdown, no mention of [dodea] education.
I found this though: http://www.feaonline.org/
As of Wednesday (April 6) morning, there is a very strong possibility of a government shutdown beginning this weekend. We remain cautiously optimistic that, if a shutdown occurs, DoDEA schools will be considered essential programs and will remain open.
Federal agencies are expected to notify their employees tomorrow (Thursday, DC time) whether they are to be considered "excepted" employees during a shutdown. Excepted employees are those who will continue to work in the event of a shutdown. Again, we are cautiously optimistic that FEA members and other school-level DoDEA employees will be considered "excepted" and continue to work.
We will post additional information as it becomes available.
[editline]7th April 2011[/editline]
Wouldn't matter for me, I guess, at the moment as spring break just begun.
Man, the Republicans keep doing a better and better drop campaigning for the Democrats.
