A saucy topic indeed
Completely agree with what he said.
Dragon's Dogma did an absolutely terrible job at even making it clear that you, essentially, HAD to romance someone. I'm sure it stated at one point that you could give gifts to people to make you like them, but I don't recall it saying that giving gifts and doing favors for someone would make them LOVE you. [sp]Love you enough to the point where they end up being a significant life or death choice at the end of the game. You are basically forced to "marry" someone, or kill them off, at the end of the game. And that someone is whoever you gave the most gifts/did the most favors for.[/sp]
I just really hate Dragon's Dogma. Nothing is more annoying than seeing the character you spent a couple hours creating, only to have them make out with that one person you did the most favors for, because the story required it.
yep. he hit it on the spot.

you gotta admit that it's hilarious that you do this long awesome dragons dogma quest then your reward is creepy romance between your character and a old guy.
Im surprised he didnt mention The Witcher's copious amounts of boning.

Every time.
This video explains it perfectly, and explains why romance is 99% awkward as fuck in 99% of video games.
I agree with him but why is he wearing gloves inside?

Romance and everything related to it should just not be in games at all.
Or anything else for that matter.

I think they need to tackle it more respectfully. The worst part about Bioware games as well, is that they have a large following of women players as well. So they're getting that shallow message as well as men.
I can think of a couple reasons that 'romance' is poorly implemented in games. First off because these aren't really games built around intimate personal relationships. And if you don't build your game around something, it's always going to be a pale and sad imitation of its real life counterpart. See how ME handles death, where people are like chess pieces that when removed might cause other chess pieces to toast their loss before locking back directly into standard function with no long term effects from grief or depression.
And secondly, because what you're talking about is just trash romance fit in for easy sex appeal. I don't really see the point in complaining about that in most instances unless it's a case of it being tacked onto an otherwise well done story. But if a writer has so little awareness or integrity that he would unnecessarily add sex to the detriment of his story his story probably wasn't that good to begin with anyway, so no skin off my back to be honest.
to be honest im more bothered that jim sterling won't stop screaming into his microphone while over enunciating

Jim Sterling hit the spot with the bit about romance in games never having any kind of long-term impact. It's like the devs/writers don't seem to understand that people act differently when they're really close to someone. I notice Shepard never really acts differently toward anyone he/she's getting it on with, except maybe Liara in one or two scenes throughout three games. I think we can mostly fault the writers for not including subtle changes here and there which, if added, could actually make things better. Until they can actually make the characters act differently towards each other it'll stay cringe-worthy at best.
It is actually really scary that AAA game developers still consider sex the last part of romance rather than a potential beginning to a new part of a romantic relationship?

it's a weird combination of difficulty trying to cram it into the story, and trying to a) appeal to 13 year old boys and b) not get their game banned and ragged on by the media.
right now i can't think of a tasteful way to have a sexual relationship in a game that isn't shit.
If you really want tasteless and stupid sex scenes, Ride to Hell: Retribution is probably the king in that regard.
it'd be great if media in general stopped putting in awkward and pointless sex scenes
they serve for nothing more that titillation

Isn't that not about Romance though, don't you really only bone Triss as like a romance path.
And Vess
And Mottle
And Cynthia
I see your point.

I think that's less inspired by their personal views and more by the fact that most game devs design romance exactly the same way they design quests.
I think they need to tackle it more respectfully.
I think they should tackle it more realistically, in Mass Effect it really felt like there was sorta this step by step 'classic' view of dating; where the final culmination was sex (Since marriage would probably be a whole other issue). As person11 said:

While it applies to Witcher 1, it certainly does not to Witcher 2. In TW2, sex is mostly regarded as leisuretime, which is why the only romantic track is with Triss (and maybe Ves I have not played that branch). The game admits that sex in itself is just this thing two people can do, and that explains why there is a lot of prostitution and other characters just looking for it. In TW2, sex isn't seen as a culmination of the relationship. That's the main difference here.
I'm sick of video game sex scenes.
No matter how I look at it, I just know deep down that at best it's intended as heavily romanticized, consequence free PG-13 smut.
If Bioware wanted to make "mature" character relationships, then replace the sex scenes with additional scenes focusing on character interaction and just character interaction; turning it into a gameplay mechanic robs any depth or complexity from it. Tease a romantic relationship if you must, but just don't make the conclusion a vapid sexual encounter devoid of any meaning past the fade to black.
