I've been wanting to play bass for a while now, but I'm not sure what would be a good bass guitar to start with. Can any bassists here recommend me something good to start out with? Maybe post what worked for you?

I thought Jazz style, or possibly metal (Judas Priest, Megadeth, ect) would be good for me. I got a budget of $300-$400. I'm having a bit of trouble finding the thread, do you have a link to it?

Squier Classic Vibe series basses are nice too.
I think a P-bass would be what you'd want, I don't play bass much more than fiddling around with one once in a while so I wouldn't know.
If you play jazz I'd recommend you getting the Fender P-bass.
I'd personally recommend a Used Mexican Fender Jazz.
Very very versatile bass. Roll off the back pickup and you get P-Bass growl. Run Both pickups and you get a nice full sound great for funk and rock. Use the bridge pickup and you get a very convincing Jaco-like bark. Blend to suit.
I have a Musicman stingray and a Fender Jazz as my two gigging basses. I still practice on my first bass every now and then... A Tanglewood Rebel 4K. Since it has the full 24 frets.
