Collision Warning with Emergency Brake is the name of a new advanced emergency braking system from Volvo that is installed in the new FH trucks. The system detects if the driver is about to run into someone from behind and warns using flashing lights and sounds. If the driver still does not act and the situation becomes critical, the car brakes automatically as much as possible.
The system combines just as in Volvo cars, a radar with a camera that keeps track forward and detects if something is in the way. In this clip a truck with a trailer loaded with 40 tons demonstrates how it works.
Emergency systems like this one will from November 2015 become a legal requirement for new trucks.

I see Volvo is maintaining their reputation as usual.
Volvo's are cool, and safe.
Holy fuck that demonstration had the semi going from 60 to 0.
I love how it brakes just exactly right not to touch the other car
Too bad that their cars don't perform as well.

Holy shit, that second test looked risky.
Mercedes have had this for a few years and DAF have it as an additional extra. It's made by the same company WABCO.

The independent breaking systems on each wheel is even cooler because on ice it means the trucks computer system will break each wheel and stop it from going into a spin. This isn't the best video because he does spin :D but its the only one i could find:

Wow, that is amazing. Usually with trucks you hit the breaks, take out 60 cars full of children and then come to a stop.

And their vans don't look pretty either!

volvo trucks have sexy ads, I can't find the one that uses techo music though to show how funny their ads can get
That braking system is nice and all, but what happens when the vehicle(s) behind the tractor slam into it after it brakes so hard?

I'd assume they've thought of that and enabled the break lights early. Plus a car can stop much faster than a lorry
The brake lights blinks rapidly when the system takes control
If I were driving I would probably barrel towards inanimate objects all the time just to trigger the warning and pretend I'm at the helm of a spaceship.
As someone who has driven a large truck before, this is a godsend.
My real question is, how well does this work with a heavy load? The flatbed I drove braked like an angel when it was empty, and like a slobbery ten-ton toddler when fully loaded down.
(I'm stupid, just read the loaded with 40 extra tons part. That's pretty incredible.)
fucking swedish engineering man

Have fun with replacing your brakes.
Let's see what happens when the truck is pulling a full load.

Nevermind, wasn't paying attention.
Make it standard on every vehicle. This would save so many lives.
reminds me a lot of BMWs xdrive.
I want a video of how crazy this shit looks in your rear view mirror.
That's fucking insane. Good on Volvo.
imagine being in that wagon...fuck

Thinking the same thing. sure an empty trailer is a breeze to stop but loaded to the back with anything from printing presses to flasks of chemicals and you got some serious momentum.
So is this strictly a sensor type of thing or did they do something to increase brake performance as well?
always wondered why big trucks and such don't have a "betty" like jets do. Would help people pay attention

the trailer in the video is 40 tons
I can see this system transferring the rear-ender back in the line. Instead of the car getting flattened, the truck gets bopped instead, because of course nobody ever follows trucks at a safe distance anymore.
The only issue I see: People cut in front of trucks that closely all the time. With how long it takes trucks to get going again, and the fact that this system always brings the truck to a complete stop, how many pileups is it going to cause that otherwise would not have happened without it? Or is there a way to override it before coming to a dead stop in the hammer lane after the dipshit car has cleared out of the danger zone?
I'd assume they've thought of that and enabled the break lights early. Plus a car can stop much faster than a lorry
Not when it's driven by some fucktarded moron that thinks it's perfectly safe to be 20 feet off the DOT bumper. Such people have no business on the road, but they're still there, and they're still tailgating.

Surely a car smashing into a truck is more preferable than a truck barrelling through a bunch of cars?
Surely a car smashing into a truck is more preferable than a truck barrelling through a bunch of cars?
Only if the trailer's DOT bumper is structurally sound. It often isn't, especially in fleets run by more cash-strapped companies, where money that would otherwise go towards ensuring the trailers are sound ends up going into keeping the junkheap trucks running. Even still, have you ever seen the crash tests those bumpers go through? Cars just do not and never have fared all that well when they tangle with semi trucks, regardless of how they manage to hit them. In many cases it may actually be preferrable to be punted off to the side than it would be to nose into the back of the trailer.
