We have all heard classical music, most people are familiar with Beethoven's 5th symphony, Fur Elise, The Hungarian Rhapsody 2 by Liszt and so on. While they may not know the names, they certainly have heard a whole lot of classical music, in movies mostly. While I do like Beethoven's 5th symphony, Fur Elise and the Hungarian Rhapsody 2, there's so much MORE than just the generic pieces you hear so many times. So, forgive me if I say this but. I am going to search deeper than just the "overly popular pieces", and by doing so also introduce people to more less known composers. Because most people have heard about Bach, Mozart and Beethoven and perhaps a few more (Beethoven and Mozart are probably the only two classical composers teenager nowadays know of though). So let's get started, I'll introduce you to a few composers and some of their works. Franz Liszt This is my favorite composer, a lot of people claim his music is all bravura (aka technical bullshit) but they are all wrong, while Liszt is known to be the greatest pianist ever and proves so by writing ridiculously difficult pieces, he is still very musical. All of you probably heard the Hungarian Rhapsody 2 as I mentioned, and probably his Liebestraum no.3, so I'll introduce you to much lesser known works which I like a lot more. Charles Valentine Alkan Just like Liszt, Alkan is also a very technically difficult composer. Liszt even said Alkan was the most technically skilled pianist he ever witnessed. Sadly Alkan became more and more of a Misanthrope and a Misogynist (aka Human hater and hatred against females) and he didn't show much of himself in public. Erik Satie is not THAT unknown but I feel his pieces needs more attention than they get. He was also pretty strange, after he died they found a whole lot of umbrellas in his house (around 60-70 I think). Adolph Von Henselt is a very unknown composer by todays standard, his works are a combination of Liszt's virtuosity and Chopin's music. Unfortunately, he stopped composing at the age of 30. The reason is not clear, but it may have been to chronic stage fright and paranoia. Where the nutsack is Chopin???
Where the nutsack is Chopin???
He is too known. I could add him if you want to though, suggest some pieces. I like his heroique polonaise the most.
Woh, this is an excellent thread. I'm really surprised that something of this caliber wouldn't have at least a few pages after 6 days. Classical music too boring or something?
props to kentz. this is a great thread.
Liszt is a beast. I'm also particularly fond of Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert and Schumann, and later romantic composers, i.e. Rubinstein, Mozskowski, Tchiakovsky, Balakirev, Rachmaninoff, Busoni; I could go on and on. I'll post examples of my favorite Liszt compositions/transcriptions, with multiple performances of the first and the last for a point I'll make later on in this post. Zwei Konzertetüden, S.145, Waldesrauschen and Gnomenreigen Claudio Arrau [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teFMIzxET3w&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMJjSbMsT8s&fmt=18[/hd] Josef Hofmann (Waldesrauschen only) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzGBsGFWf5M&fmt=18[/hd] Gyorgy Cziffra (Gnomenreigen only, watch the entire thing, the very end kills me every time) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DsdX7vWFiM&fmt=18[/hd] Schubert/Liszt Erlkönig performed by Frederic Lamond [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhzar0nTktk&fmt=18[/hd] Transcendental Etude No. 10 performed by Cziffra [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0cbB7Sdmcg&fmt=18[/hd] Trois Etudes de concert S.144 performed by Arrau [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb5XNRcIlzw&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0pGsIPQvWI&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3nEQdgMElc&fmt=18[/hd] Schumann/Liszt Frühlingsnacht, S.568, performed by Joseph Lhevinne [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LScbDl4dMEM&fmt=18[/hd] Mephisto Waltz No.1, S.514 William Kapell [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofdRsvBHa14&fmt=18[/hd] Ervin Nyiregyhàzi [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpzW7RH0cgY&fmt=18[/hd] If you like the Heroic Polonaise, I have a playlist dedicated to performances of it on my youtube page (click here), along with my semi-large and constantly growing classical favorites playlist. The credit for bringing life to these pieces falls squarely on the shoulders of the performers, especially so in solo/duet work. Different performers play the same pieces differently, so subsequently different interpretations and interpreters have different appeals, places of preferred emphasis, tempo, etc. The Heroic Polonaise is a perfect example of that, as well as the performances of the Zwei Konzertetuden and the First Mephisto Waltz I've posted itt. Subscribed to this thread. Good stuff. As for pieces of Chopin's, the Ballades, Etudes, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Waltzes, Polonaises and Preludes are all good examples of his work. Kentz, I can confer with you if you like or I can contribute on my own.
Why no Stravinsky or Rachmaninoff? Stravinskys Infernal Dance Of All Katscheis Subjects is the best piece of art ever written
He is too known. I could add him if you want to though, suggest some pieces. I like his heroique polonaise the most.
So what, are we having a sort of underground Classical discussion, as bizarre as that would be.
I'm especially fond of Operas. One of my favorite songs is by Joseph Haydn. "Schon eilet froh der Ackersmann", aria from the opera "The Seasons". "Nun, liebes Weibchen, ziehst mit mir", a comical duet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Easy and fun to listen to. Finally, "La ci darem la mano", another duet by Mozart from the famous opera "Don Giovanni".
Why no Stravinsky or Rachmaninoff? Stravinskys Infernal Dance Of All Katscheis Subjects is the best piece of art ever written
I have yet to get into Stravinsky, although The Rite of Spring/Firebird is wonderful. Rachmaninoff's concerti are monstrous, especially the second, and his solo piano works are for the most part solid.
Hey does anyone know what a Bolero is
According to wikipedia it's a popular slow-tempo latin music with Spanish and Cuban forms. Translated into cow: Moo mooo moo moooo moo moo.
I think he means Ravel's Bolero (posted in 2 parts) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3J2_EOHBI4&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggsCw4i0S-U&fmt=18[/hd]
Why no Stravinsky or Rachmaninoff? I haven't updated the thread in a while because I did not believe people were interested in it, now when I see the new comments I am happily gonna continue updating. I'm not into classical that much, but Yann Tiersen, Philip Glass and John Williams are a few classical musicians I really like.

Just add me on steam and msg me later tonight (I might be at work so dont worry if I dont answer, I'll get back to you eventually.) To contribute today here is a performance of Moritz Moszkowski's Piano Concerto and a couple of performances of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne. My next post will be exclusively Chopin and a list of good youtube sources and channels. I am also going back and editing in links for wikipedias/ismlp pages for performers and composers into my previous post. I'm going through the Mazurkas right now.
Ok here is the second part of my Chopin set. I've gone ahead and posted 14 Opuses here to make room at the beginning of the next set for a wider look at the preludes of Op. 28. I could have done the same thing with the Op. 10 & 25 etudes since there are numerous fine recordings out there, but Cortot's recordings are absolutely sublime, a fine mix of artistry and technique, even though Cortot was well known for his very artistically inclined interpretations at the expense of "slips" in technical skill. Anyhow, without further ado, Chopin's Opuses 14-27 Rondeau de Concert 'Krakowiak' Op. 14 , Ashkenazy [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UjNU4RBVNM&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9LUtsdBlCU&fmt=18[/hd] 3 Nocturnes Op. 15, Maurizio Pollini [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpsVlMmZ2Tw&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtBmGZ890sc&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zClxrbMqlVA&fmt=18[/hd] Introduction and Rondo Op. 16, Heinrich Neuhaus [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=083AWBOG-m8&fmt=18[/hd] 4 Mazurkas Op. 17, Rubinstein [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6RmAtOGkSc&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJKbcUS_GXY&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JZ_zdVdV8&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idbaPu1gDPg&fmt=18[/hd] Grande Valse Brillante Op.18, Dinu Lipatti (more performances posted here http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=18824160&postcount=97) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r08ZddiW74&fmt=18[/hd] Bolero Op. 19, Emil von Sauer [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPQAdP_lWTs&fmt=18[/hd] Scherzo No. 1 Op. 20, Sviatoslav Richter [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-JIApV1pEw&fmt=18[/hd] Piano Concerto No. 2 Op. 21, Richter [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x87ct7olI9Q&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ05AVwwhDQ&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZKDUtwyoR4&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgE3RxmpIkg&fmt=18[/hd] Andante Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brilliante Op. 22, Horowitz [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxDzXpgNsXk&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LZnGADAaFA&fmt=18[/hd] Ballade No. 1 Op. 23, Hofmann (to view many other versions of this piece, check this post http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=18658637&postcount=79 ) [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX6PXkqOr0Y&fmt=18[/hd] 4 Mazurkas Op. 24, Rubinstein [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjTwFhtuO6Q&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzxlN_lDvv0&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L9c8WHuYkE&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD5ZMNtCqRw&fmt=18[/hd] 12 Etudes Op. 25, Cortot [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T09OvyzM0Xo&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua8BuCEV9ck&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX4POX--Bc8&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hdf1B3NLOA&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2Q7FW3bJag&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKnJQws1Cyw&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54A9A--ED90&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jotKQtZBHcE&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_cl9Jl20FU&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grzOk4avWhE&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhFO7LxR4K8&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRxGkzmhh-g&fmt=18[/hd] Two Polonaises Op.26, Samson François [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_ZdK-TXqpA&fmt=18[/hd] [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6gnnwwP_j8&fmt=18[/hd] 2 Nocturnes Op. 27, Sofronitsky [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9nDMS8mgR8&fmt=18[/hd]
you're amazing
Enjoy Chopin's Op. 28 24 Preludes Op. 28, performed by multiple pianists. These short pieces were composed by Chopin between 1835 and 1839. Unlike some preludes composed before that time, Chopin's preludes stand as individual pieces, each one representing one of the 24 keys, and a single emotion or idea. I will only post one video of each individual prelude here. However, if there is a recording of the entire set, I will link a playlist containing the complete preludes by the corresponding performer, as well as links to several complete recordings of the preludes at the bottom of the prelude section.
